Hate towards PlayStation's new console exclusive is being driven by bigots, says developer

Forspoken was finally released by Luminous Productions and Square Enix yesterday after several lengthy delays - and it’s created quite a ruckus. On the whole critics aren’t impressed, but it’s Forspoken’s dialogue that’s causing a stir.

Over on Metacritic, Forspoken landed a score of 68 which isn’t terrible but it also isn’t great. It’s a game packed with potential and oftentimes fun gameplay. The problem is, for the most part, Forspoken feels quite generic. In our review, GAMINGbible’s Imogen wrote, “It’s a gorgeous game, but God if it’s not like a minorly insipid make-up artist’s Instagram grid. Loads of things to look at but no actual meaning in any of them.” Criticism towards Forspoken’s dialogue isn’t new, although we actually quite enjoyed it but one developer is claiming that hatred towards the game is predominantly being driven ‘by bigots.’

As reported by TheMix, David Scott Jaffe, who directed the original God of War, has opened up about the controversy surrounding Forspoken saying that he will purchase the game out of spite towards “the a-holes who clearly don’t like women, black people, or PlayStation.” The dev added that he was also convinced to give it a go thanks to “the good stuff I’m hearing from people who are playing it - and the fact that I did enjoy the demo.”

The thing is, the dialogue is actually very similar to what you might find in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Quips are nothing new. Fans are actually rallying to support actress Ella Balinska who they believe has offered an incredible performance despite the controversy.

Twitter user heycalamityyy wrote, “There's an undeniable, special magic seeing Frey in a beautiful fantasy setting. Thank you [Ella] for using your talents and passion to bring her to life. Here’s to many more incredible Black femmes leading fantastical stories,” while anairis_q added, “Ella Balinska does a fantastic job and i’m in love with her deliveries.” Maybe Forspoken won’t be the total flop many suspect it will be.
