Joker 2 teaser drops online, and it looks stunning

To celebrate the fourth anniversary of Todd Phillip’s Joker, the director headed to Instagram to share a teaser of its upcoming sequel.

Joaquin Phoenix starred as Batman’s arch-nemesis The Joker in the 2019 movie release Joker and now four years on, fans are eagerly awaiting its sequel, Joker: Folie à Deux starring Lady Gaga taking on the role of Harley Quinn. The 2019 release earned $1.7 billion at the box office, making it the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time but it didn’t go without its fair share of critical responses.

Hear Joaquin Phoenix talk about his role as Joker below!

The movie tells the Joker’s origin story, showing viewers how he ended up like he did in movies such as The Dark Knight which saw the late Heath Ledger take on the role. Director Todd Phillips explored Arthur Fleck’s childhood and series of later-life events which saw him battle with mental illness. However, not all viewers enjoyed the experience with some critics calling it “confused and potentially toxic”.

Despite Joker currently sitting at ‘mixed or average reviews’ on Metacritic, its sequel is still highly anticipated, not least because it stars Lady Gaga herself. Joker: Folie à Deux continues on Arthur’s story and although the plot is currently unknown, it will reportedly feature some musical numbers. To celebrate the upcoming release, Phillips took to Instagram to share a new look at the sequel.

"Thanks for all the messages. Four years ago we had quite a ride. Lots of great memories. More to come," he wrote alongside the new still. The image features The Joker himself standing in the rain surrounded by brightly coloured umbrellas. It remains to be seen if this will be a Singing in the Rain number or just Arthur having a melancholic moment.

With the movie set to hit theatres on 4 October 2024, we still have a year to wait. However, with Phoenix reprising his role as The Joker alongside Brendan Gleeson and Catherine Keener in mystery roles, it’s not going to be something you want to miss.
