Horizon Zero Dawn remake seemingly accidentally confirmed via PlayStation Plus

Horizon Zero Dawn remake seemingly accidentally confirmed via PlayStation Plus

Horizon Zero Dawn looks set to get a new lease of life very soon

This year’s summer showcase season is almost upon us. Geoff Keighley’s Summer Game Fest is due to be held on 7 June, followed by The Xbox Games Showcase on 8 June, and the Ubisoft Forward on 10 June.

That pretty much mirrors last year’s line-up. The only event we’re missing is a PlayStation Showcase. In 2023, Sony’s PlayStation Showcase was held on 24 May, a couple weeks prior to Summer Game Fest really getting underway.

It’s assumed that despite not yet being announced, we will see a repeat of that event this year. Let’s face it, Sony is in dire need of filling out its upcoming release slate.

We’re still awaiting a release date for timed PS5 exclusive Silent Hill 2, whilst we’re also expecting updates on the Until Dawn remake and Concord.

The latter half of the year though is thus far completely devoid of any major first-party exclusives, and surely that’s got to change.

There must be plenty in the works given that we’re in the dark as to what most of Sony’s major studios are working on including Naughty Dog, Santa Monica, Bend Studio, and Sucker Punch.

We may have just figured out what Guerrilla Games is up to though.

Guerrilla’s last release was the fantastic Horizon Forbidden West: Burning Shores. Take a look at the expansion in action below.

It’s been rumoured for quite some time now that Horizon Zero Dawn may be getting a remake or remaster. It’s a stellar game but I have to say, I’d love to see it benefit from some of sequel Forbidden West’s upgrades.

Forbidden West features some of the best NPCs I’ve ever seen which is impressive because Zero Dawn features some of the worst. The ‘dead behind the eyes’ variety.

Well, it’s been confirmed that Horizon Zero Dawn is departing PlayStation Plus’ extra tier on 21 May.

If you’re thinking, ‘Games leave PlayStation Plus all of the time,’ they do but those are typically third-party games with expiring licences. It’s rare to see the departure of a Sony-owned PlayStation Plus title.

I’m going to use The Last of Us Remastered as an example, a game that was also once on PlayStation Plus. It isn’t any longer. Why? Because Sony wants you to buy the remade The Last of Us Part I.

The removal of Horizon Zero Dawn has sent the internet alight as it now seems increasingly likely that we could see a remaster or remake shown off during the rumoured upcoming PlayStation Showcase.

I spoke to Guerrilla’s studio director Jan-Bart Van Been last month who teased that there’s “a lot more to come in the Horizon universe”. Could this be one such project? It’s looking like a strong possibility.
