Constantine 2’s director wants the film to be R-rated, and honestly, I’d be disappointed if it wasn’t.
Out of all DC characters, John Constantine has to be one of my all-time favourites, no matter which continuity he’s in. Whether it be his debut in the Swamp Thing comic series, his Hellblazer Vertigo run, or the more recent all-magical, all-powerful adaption, he’s the star of the show in everything he appears in.

It might also be a hot take to say I loved the live-action Constantine film with Keanu Reeves. Despite it straying very far from the source material, mostly due to him being American instead of a Brit, I thought it was a fantastic interpretation of the character.

Matt Ryan definitely played the best live-action version of the character with the Constantine TV show as well as appearances on Arrow and Legends Of Tomorrow, but Keanu Reeves still did a fine job, and it’s great to see a sequel is still on the cards.
It’s really early on in development but is still on track to happen, more so now that the writer’s strike has lifted as that has caused several delays in production for loads of film and TV projects.
Constantine 2’s director Francis Lawrence implied steady progress is being made, and that Keanu Reeves, Akiva Goldsman and himself have had several meetings to work out story details.
Lawrence added that they desperately want to make a “real rated R version” of Constantine, which sounds perfect given the source material revolves around the occult, angels, and demons.

He went on to say that he would have made the first film “much scarier and much more violent” if it wasn’t a PG-13 and that the sequel will be R-rated if possible, as he believes that’s what fans “always wanted originally.”
Here’s hoping Constantine 2 retains its place in James Gunn’s DC multiverse, as it’s high time the character returns to the big screen, hopefully leading to further projects down the road.
