Happy December! I hope you're all in good cheer and wish glad tidings to both you and your kin. How about a cheeky festive treat, too? There are all kinds of free games available this month, and I'm here like a big ol' beardy man to slide down your chimney, guzzle a slice of fruit cake, and drop some gaming tips into your stocking.

This month we have a pile of real gems. Fitting, for this time of year. You're welcome.

Now, bring me some figgy pudding.

Decidedly Unfestive

I can't be dealing with spooky scary gaming experiences. I guess some people can, though. In Dead By Daylight, you and a team of pals are tasked with taking on classic horror movie villains and murderers. Sounds terrifying, I'm out.

If Ruth's piece on Dead By Daylight's characters is anything to go by though, spooks and thrills are far from all this game has to offer. If you can handle the scariness, Dead By Daylight has really captured the imaginations of its players. One person acts as the killer while four try to escape their grasps, and there are some real classics of the genre kicking about. From Freddy Kruger to Pyramid Head, you sickos will have a field day with this game, provided you haven't tried it already.

It's the most wonderful time of the year too, so it's now free on the Epic Games Store for PC.

Do Your Chores

Games really are a window into another world. A fantastical universe where anything is possible. Xbox Game Pass' latest addition is a perfect example of this, as it simulates something I'll never be able to experience. That's right, Lawn Mowing Simulator offers the player the opportunity to explore the great outdoors in a garden. I live in central London. This is a far-off dream for me.

According to the game's Steam page, Lawn Mowing Simulator offers a plethora of classic mowers from fully-licensed brands including SCAG and Toro, so if you're a gardening gear superfan, it's well worth giving a shot.

It's pretty complex too, as you'll need to manage the minutiae of your mower, from route to blade height as you plan and execute your job.

It's available right now on Game Pass for Xbox Series X|S and PC.

If You Haven't Played This Before, Where Have You Been?

Stardew Valley. Do I need to say more? It's the quintessential farming game, taking Harvest Moon mechanics and bringing them in line with modern-day game design sensibilities.

If you haven't played it before, there's no better time (aside from the past). You inherit a farm in the titular idyllic valley, and are then able to set about your journey farming parsnips, questing through the local dungeon, and romancing the townsfolk by gifting them various fruits and rocks. What a treat.

If you haven't already, Ruth wrote a great piece about how Stardew Valley became a reliable haven for a disabled gamer - give it a look while the game downloads.

Stardew Valley really is whatever you make of it. In the years since the game's release there has been so much new content added to it too, so even if you played it to death back in the day there's every chance you'll want to go back for more.

Stardew Valley is free with Xbox Game Pass on both Xbox Series S|X and PC right now.

Winter Blues

Baby, it's cold outside. No seriously, it's freezing. We're all going to die. Welcome to Frostpunk

As the overseer of the last city in existence, your goal is to survive. But it's not just you. Frostpunk puts you in charge of a whole society. You need to make the rules, deal with difficult moral decisions, and decide what to prioritise as the fight to survive becomes bleaker and bleaker.

It's a really compelling experience, and you'll need to make a whole lot of sacrifices in order to get through the myriad challenges the game throws at you constantly. Turning off the heating will cause your townsfolk to become unwell, but if you literally have too little fuel to make things work, what other choice do you have?

Will you become a strike-busting authoritarian or a liberty-loving legend? It's all up to you. If you resonated with the studio's previous game, This War Of Mine, Frostpunk might just be for you.

Frostpunk is free on Prime Gaming this month - maybe you'll be really good at it and everyone you lead will start living in a winter wonderland! Who knows.

That's all I have for you this week. What a delight. Take your pick between these fabulous freebies and call it an Advent Calendar of sorts from me to you. No, I didn't make these games or decide to make them free, but I am bringing this news to you. In some ways, spreading the good news is what the Christmas season is all about.
