Capcom Wants To Revive Old Franchises, It Should Start With These Classics

Capcom Wants To Revive Old Franchises, It Should Start With These Classics

Give the people what they want. And by people, I mean me.

According to recent reports, Capcom has been emboldened by the critical and commercial success of Resident Evil 2 Remake and Devil May Cry V, and plans to revisit more classic franchises in the hopes of mining them for further financial gain.

Ostensibly, this means that we can expect more remakes of classic franchises in the vein of Resident Evil 2 Remake as well as direct sequels and revivals of old IPs, in the vein of Devil May Cry V.

Given that Capcom has a fair few old bangers tucked away in its vault, there's no telling where the company will decide to start - but you can read on below for a list of Capcom-owned IPs that I think are long overdue a proper second shot at life.

You'll note that some of these franchises have actually had entries quite recently, such as Marvel VS Capcom Infinite and Dead Rising 4. However, given that one of these games was bang average and the other was complete crap, I'm choosing to ignore their existence and believe Capcom would be better off doing the same and going back to the drawing board.

Dino Crisis

The first choice is also quite clearly the most obvious. Fans have been screaming out for a revival or remaster of the late 90's dinosaur-packed survival horror for years now, and after seeing Capcom deliver genuine Game Of The Year material with Resident Evil 2 Remake, we're only more desperate to see what the company could do with Dino Crisis.

Whether we get a brand new sequel or a ground-up remake of the PlayStation classic, the fact is technology has come on leaps and bounds since the last Dino Crisis, meaning the titular prehistoric beasties would be more terrifying than ever before.

Marvel VS Capcom

Marvel VS Capcom /
Capcom

Marvel VS Capcom, which originally started life as X-Men VS Street Fighter being expanding into something far more ambitious, is a franchise with bags of promise. The arcade brawler seems to have gotten just a little bit worse with every incarnation, and while Marvel VS Capcom Infinite wasn't a total disaster, it wasn't as great as it could have been either.

Overhauling the series with a fresh artstyle, new modes, mechanics, and maybe even a story mode that doesn't seem like it was written by a ten-year-old playing with action figures in their bedroom could be just what this contest of champions needs.

Ghosts 'n Goblins

Ghosts 'n Goblins /
Capcom

Ghosts 'n Goblins is a franchise that has never cared to mess about, and was infamous for being laughably, ridiculously difficult long before FromSoftware breezed into town with Dark Souls.

I've attempted to play through Super Ghouls 'n Goblins on the SNES many times, for example, and have always found myself completely unable to get any further than the first level. Git gud indeed.

Given that there's been something of a resurgence for super challenging games in the last few years with the likes of Celeste, Super Meat Boy, and pretty much anything FromSoftware makes, now is the perfect time for Ghosts 'n Goblins to make its grand return - maybe Capcom could give us a full 3D entry that puts a new spin on the Dark Souls formula?

Dead Rising

Dead Rising 4 /
Capcom

The Dead Rising franchise is built on such a simple premise that I'm not really sure how most of the games in the series so far have either been bang average or really rather bad.

Just give me an open world full of zombies to plow through, engaging side quests and missions to get distracted by, and plenty of over the top items with which to slice, dice, smash, crash, and tear my way through the aforementioned zombies - is that asking for too much?

Oh, and I know Resident Evil kind of has the zombie horror thing locked down for Capcom, but it'd be pretty cool if Dead Rising played up to the whole horror element of relentless zombie hordes just a little bit more. There's room for humour and horror in the franchise, I think.

Okami

Okami /
Capcom

Okami is quite easily one of the most underrated gems of the PS2 era, and a game that everybody - and I mean everybody - needs to play.

An utterly gorgeous Zeldaesque adventure steeped in Japanese mythology, Okami tells the story the goddess Okami Amaterasu who, reborn as a white wolf, sets out on a quest to rid medieval Japan of a curse that's draining life and colour from the land.

Armed with a magic brush and a variety of techniques that can restore the world to the way it was, Okami combined smart puzzles, exploration, and combat with an epic, sprawling story packed with memorable characters. If you love Zelda and have never played Okami, you owe it to yourself to check it out. It's available on PS4, Xbox One, PC, and Switch in remastered form right now.

While a HD remaster is all well and good though, a proper next-gen sequel is what the people really want from Capcom. And by people, I mean me. Please Capcom. Give us Okami Chapter II.
