Free Games Roundup: Play Games And Save Lives This Weekend

Free Games Roundup: Play Games And Save Lives This Weekend

Who doesn't love a freebie?

What up, my fellow stay-at-homers? We're now approximately 400 years into this whole lockdown lark, but it seems like there are more than a few chinks of light on the horizon. I'm far from the type to speculate as to when exactly I'll be back in the pub, but each new day brings me fresh hope that we're getting closer to that blessed moment.

Until then, you know the drill. We stay in and we save lives. What you do while staying in is entirely your own business. Maybe you're exercising, baking, starting a podcast nobody will listen to - I dunno, it's your life. Might I suggest, however, playing some lovely (and free) video games.

I've been hard at work (well, using Google) to round up all the best free games from the last seven days. Read on and see if anything gets you in the mood to pick up a controller.

Total War: Shogun 2 /
SEGA

I'd like to kick off with a big one, and caveat this with the fact that this particular deal ends at 6pm today (May 1st), so you really don't have long left. If you're reading this even a few hours late, I'm afraid you've missed the boat. Sorry. Hopefully you're not reading this too late, in which case you can still head over to Steam and claim the excellent strategy title Total War: Shogun 2.

Over on the Epic Games Store, you've still got plenty of time to get your hands on the regular weekly freebies. This week's offerings include the pants-wettingly terrifying horror game Amnesia: The Dark Descent, and top-down action RPG Crashlands. Two pretty solid offerings from Epic this week, I have to say. Claim them right here.

Moving swiftly on, Bandai Namco Entertainment is giving away a classic slice of arcade action on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC (via Steam). You've got until May 10th to download the really-rather wonderful Pac Man Championship Edition 2.

Amnesia /
Frictional Games

But Pac Man isn't the only console freebie you can get right now. I'm sure you've already claimed these, but don't forget that you can still download and keep Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection and Journey as part of Sony's Play At Home initiative. Technically, that's four great games there - and all for the extra-low price of nothing.

Ubisoft is also back again with its biggest selection of free games and trials yet. You can see them all for yourself here, but it looks like Assassin's Creed II is back to download and keep, alongside the excellent Rayman Legends and charming RPG Child of Light. All of these had been made free at various points since lockdown began, but they all seem to be back up and available to download. Don't miss out on any of these if you slept on 'em the first time.

Oh, and once again, GOG is still giving away a selection of 27 classic PC games for absolutely nothing. I'm not sure when this one will end, but it's been available for weeks now... so do take a look and see if anything jumps out at you. You'll miss it when it's gone.

Finally, while not free for everyone, I'd also like to point any of our wonderful friends and family in the NHS to an incredible new program that was introduced this week. Games For Carers is a fantastic new initiative wherein anyone with an NHS email address can simply log in to this site here and claim a free game from over 80,000 indie and AAA titles.

Assassin's Creed II /
Ubisoft

That's pretty much it for all the new freebies this week, but don't forget about free-to-play battle royales like Warzone, Fortnite, and Apex Legends. You can also get your hands on plenty of awesome titles via subscription services like Xbox Game Pass and PS Now, so get yourself hooked up with a free trial if you haven't already used the service.

And of course, if you want to read up on classic Flash games, open world epics, story-driven games, relaxing games, or even games to play with your kids, we've got you more than covered. They might not be free (apart from the Flash games), but they're all worth a look in these trying times.

Have a great weekend, and remember that every day is one step closer to this being over. Oh, and do feel free to let us know on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram what you're playing this weekend.
