2007 Was An Absolutely Ridiculous Year For Video Games

I never really noticed until just now, but 2007 was an absolutely ridiculous year for video games, wasn't it?

I know that every now and again we're blessed with a year packed with huge releases, of course. I always regard 2004 (Halo 2, Half-Life 2, GTA: San Andreas, World Of Warcraft, The Sims 2) as a massive one. More recently 2017 proved itself with the likes of The Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild, Nier Automata, Horizon Zero Dawn, and Persona 5. But 2007? Somehow I forgot about 2007. I'm an idiot. I'd like to thank Reddit user FugginCandle for reminding me of one of the best gaming years of my life. Heck, just take a look at some of the releases below!

Super Mario Galaxy, Assassin's Creed, Call Of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, BioShock, Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, Mass Effect, Crysis, Portal, God Of War II, Metroid Prime 3: Corruption
- the list just keeps going. I'm not entirely sure what Spider-Man 3 is doing on the above image because it was absolute shite, but the sheer strength of the rest of the games up there definitely makes up for it.

It's not enough that Nintendo and Activision delivered series-best entries in the form of Super Mario Galaxy and Modern Warfare, 2007 also saw the birth of some of modern gaming's biggest franchises. I honestly can't believe Uncharted, Mass Effect, Assassin's Creed, and The Witcher all started their journey within a year of each other. Granted the first entries in these respective series haven't aged brilliantly, but they're all historic releases regardless and well worth checking out to this day.

2007 was also the year music-based rhythm games really started to take off. Rock Band and Guitar Hero 3: Legends Of Rock were bitter rivals, sure, but most of us spent endless evenings chugging away on both. I have nothing but fond memories of the latter game especially, which I maintain is still the best Guitar Hero title. Damn I miss that series.

I suppose you could argue that 2007 played a hugely important role in shaping video games as we know them today. Major franchises were born, classic series were perfected, and Spider-Man 3 proved that you can't just slap a superhero in a crappy game and hope for the best. Was it the greatest year ever for gaming? Probably not, no, but it was an undeniably special time for gamers everywhere - one that so many clearly still hold dear. Thanks, 2007. Love ya.
