If you’re a big fan of Hogwarts Legacy, you may be looking for your next big RPG to play. There are plenty to choose from, but Steam has some great choices for your next game. Each of these games offers a wealth of quests, plenty of great characters, and huge worlds to explore.
Hogwarts Legacy should still be getting DLC soon
There's a lovely mix here of action RPGs, MMOs and RPGs that lean into lots of different fantasy stereotypes. Whatever you choose from this list you'll get a great story and some impressive characters, too.
Final Fantasy 14
Do you want to lose hundreds of hours of your life to one of the best RPGs of recent years? Do you want to create an adorable character you can dress up and then head out to fight enormous bosses? Final Fantasy 14 is an MMORPG, so it’s a bit different to Hogwarts Legacy. Imagine millions of people playing the same game as you, at exactly the same time. You can jump in and out of groups, take on small missions, or band together to take on raids. There’s always something to do and people to hand out with.
Skyrim
Skyrim is the game that has appeared on pretty much every system. It’s also one of the greatest RPGs of all time and deserves to be played by as many people as possible. An action RPG that came out in 2011, it’s still widely respected as an amazing experience. You are dragonborn, a hero prophesied to return and use your voice to command powers that will allow you to stand among dragons. This vast open world is yours to explore, and you will. Every detour is a great moment to find amazing loot and fight for freedom.
Witcher 3
You may already be familiar with The Witcher franchise as it made the jump to Netflix some years ago with Henry Cavill taking the role of Geralt. The Witcher 3 is an action RPG played in the third-person perspective as you control Geralt, a Witcher who battles and slays beasts that prey on humanity. With spells to learn, different equipment to use, and a massive world to explore, there’s plenty to sink your teeth into. And if you play and love the game, there’s a whole set of books the game was based on that you can read after.
Dragon’s Dogma
Originally released for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, you’d be playing a newer version called Dark Arisen which is enhanced with lots of quality-of-life improvements. Dragon’s Dogma (sequel is coming soon!) is an action RPG that features hack-and-slash combat creating chaotic fights of steel clashing and spells whizzing by. Taking place in a world called Gransys, inspired by Sicily you’re on course to take on a huge dragon, Grigori. Along the way, you’ll gather ‘pawns’ as helpers who will battle by your side. There’s a wonderfully deep story waiting for you here.
Fable Anniversary
Fable, an RPG that doesn’t take itself seriously, it’s the oldest title on this list but doesn’t suffer for it. This game is an absolute delight and one that established so many of the RPG tropes we’ve come to love through a traditional fantasy story that plays like a fairy tale.. Made by a British team, Fable adopted a very British sense of humour in turns witty, dry, and sarcastic. There’s a real sense of watching your hero change and evolve as you act, depending on whether you perform good or evil deeds.
Shadow of War
If you want a taste of Lord of the Rings, then Middle-earth: Shadow of War will make a change from Hogwarts. Based on Tolkien’s stories, this game is set between the events of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. You play as Talion who looks to craft a new ring of power to defeat Sauron. With a great voice cast, brilliant visuals, and some superb action, this is a great RPG that was made popular by the nemesis system, which gave orcs a personality and hierarchy system. This fully rounded out the enemy races, giving them and the game a lot more depth.
Tales of Arise
This is the 17th entry in the ‘Tales of’ series, but don’t you worry, you don’t need to play the previous 16. The game follows two protagonists from opposing sides of the world - Dahna and Rena - and covers the oppression of the Dhanan people. It’s an action game where fights take place in real time with an emphasis on evading and countering enemies while you line up big power attacks. One of the highlights of the ‘Tales of’ series is the beautiful anime-style visuals and this entry doesn’t disappoint. It’s not overly sprawling in size either, so won’t take hundreds of hours to finish.
Starfield
The newest game on this list is Bethesda’s most recent RPG. Starfield takes players out into space for the only sci-fi adventure here. You can see the stars with different companions while you search for mysterious relics on far-flung planets, or take a break from the main campaign with lots of side missions. The combat is brilliant and the guns are a joy to use. You can really define your own character, as well as personalise your spaceship or build outposts on your favourite planet.
