PlayStation Buying Guide: The Best Gifts For Fans, This Christmas

Featured Image Credit: PlayStation, TUBBZ

PlayStation is kind of a big deal - you probably know that already. For some of you, PlayStation might as well mean gaming, just like Google means you're searching for what time the local DIY store closes, and Hoover means you're overdue sucking up all that filth from your bedroom floor. But what to get a PlayStation-loving friend or family member, this Christmas? There's so very much to choose from, outside of the consoles (like any of us can find a PlayStation 5, lol) and games themselves; so we've selected a handful of gift ideas here, to give you a little helping hand.

PlayStation Controller Pillow

Ever fallen asleep on your DualShock 4 and awoken with the analogue sticks imprinted in your cheek? Nah, me neither... Not that often, anyway. But if you're gaming until the early hours and want to protect against unsightly pad-pressure marks, keeping this pillow handy might be just the ticket. It's big enough that you won't accidentally pick it up and wonder why your little fella on screen isn't moving, but small enough that you could also use it as a travel pillow, for when we're all allowed back on planes and boats and the like. Cat owners, expect to see this covered, completely, in moulted hair exactly 48 hours after getting it.

If you're yet to move from PS4 to PS5 - and let's face it, that's most of us - you might be in the market for a controller to really bring your aging console's twilight years to life. The Nacon Revolution Pro Unlimited pad is one of the best-rated alternatives to the standard DualShock 4 out there, featuring rear-mounted switches and shortcut buttons, removable analogue stick heads, LEDs to show when you're muted in play and when your battery is about to die, and a softer texture that'll be a lil less slippy in the hand than a standard pad. The linked model is a camo design but you can get this in other colours - just expect to pay a little more for those.

PlayStation Fleece Throw

PlayStation Fleece Throw - Amazon link - £12.99

Chilly out, isn't it? At least where I am, right now, the mercury's fallen a fair bit in the last few weeks, and working from home is a constant battle between layering up and switching the heating on. Here's something that can help - wrap yourself up in this officially licensed throw and you can keep the cold away while you're tap-tapping away in work hours and playing your favourite PlayStation titles in the evenings. It's got a classic, immediately recognisable design to it, with the button icons, but is subtle enough to not scream GAMER at any visiting relatives.

God of War - the Official Novelisation

Did you love 2018's PlayStation 4 hit enough to want to read the story you already played? Or: does a friend, or family member? Here's your chance, or theirs, to do just that. Written by fantasy author J.M. Barlog, the father of the game's director Cory Barlog, this novel is available in a variety of formats to suit all readers and, indeed, listeners. Amazon reviews say it's "a pretty faithful retelling of the video game", and that it "also gives more depth to all the character when they think or interact with each other". Which is, good? We think so. Good.

PlayStation Icons Lamp
PlayStation Icons Lamp

PlayStation Colour-Changing Icons Lamp - Amazon link - £22.99

Surely, surely, there's no doubt that PlayStation's button symbols - the square, the triangle, the circle and the cross - are iconic, nowadays. Like the Nike swoooooosh and the Apple, um, apple, there's no need for the word "PlayStation" to be present on branded items when these four shapes are used. And here are those items, illuminated. What's not to like?

PlayStation Controller Mug
PlayStation Controller Mug

PlayStation Controller Mug - Amazon link - £7.00

I'm not totally convinced by that handle - and if I'm really honest, I'm not into drinking my tea from a mug that isn't a white inside. Just helps you judge the colour of your brew better, its strength, doesn't it? But if you're not as fussy about your hot beverage containers as I am, this oversized PlayStation-themed mug might be perfect. It holds drinks. It's big. Its handle looks like a PlayStation controller. Massive logo. Job, done, really.

Spyro the Dragon Plushie
Spyro the Dragon Plushie

Spyro the Dragon Plushie - Amazon link - £22.47

Spyro is a character that's pretty synonymous with the first PlayStation console. Sony never really had a mascot, proper, in the UK, so the purple dragon's as much a contender as Crash Bandicoot, Lara Croft, or the robot rabbit from Jumping Flash!. This cuddly interpretation of Spyro is a) pretty cute TBF and b) probably safety checked by the necessary bodies to ensure that it won't be full of sawdust and bones. Probably.

Bloodborne: The Card Game
Bloodborne: The Card Game

Bloodborne: The Card Game - Amazon link - £34.88

Is your Bloodborne-loving friend really a Bloodborne lover if they've not played this card game adaptation of FromSoftware's knuckles-whitening, PS4-exclusive adventure? I mean, yeah, sure, they probably are. But! This Chalice Dungeon-set card game, designed by Eric M Lang (who's previously worked on games based on Game of Thrones and Star Wars), comes highly recommended, and it's asking price isn't so severe that it's going to make the OG video game seem like the supporting material. And yes, you can expect to die in this one - over and over, and over, again.

PlayStation Playing Cards
PlayStation Playing Cards

PlayStation Playing Cards - Amazon link - £5.93

If it's more traditional cards you're after, this officially licensed set not only looks stylish but comes in a PS1-themed tin box, too. The usual hearts, clubs, diamonds and spades are replaced with the four PlayStation symbols, but otherwise these are cards just like the ones your great-great-grandmammy used to play rummy with. If it ain't broke.

TUBBZ God of War Figurine
TUBBZ God of War Figurine

TUBBZ God of War Kratos Rubber Duck Figurine - Amazon link - £16.49

It's a rubber duck. It's also Kratos. You can get a wide range of these TUBBZ, if you're so inclined, but this God of War (2018) styled offering is definitely... one of them. Look at his little axe. His little beard. His little incredibly angry... burning with rage... lusting to murder eyeballs. And his little, fluffy butt. A treat.

Uncharted Top Trumps
Uncharted Top Trumps

Uncharted Top Trumps - Amazon link - £4.45

More cards! Top Trumps is a card game given out to kids on their birthdays and/or at Christmas time, from around the age of four through to, I reckon, 12 or 13. Above that? Not so much. I reckon most are over playing higher or lower by that point, and have moved onto suppin' Hooch down the local park. The PEGI rating on Uncharted 4: A Thief's End, which this Top Trumps set is based on, is 16. So like, that's a thing to bear in mind. However, if you're after an Uncharted- or PlayStation-themed gift that really won't break the bank, this is a valid option.

The Art of Horizon Zero Dawn
The Art of Horizon Zero Dawn

The Art of Horizon Zero Dawn - Amazon link - £20.57

A beautiful book of beautiful art from a frequently beautiful game that's regularly held up as one of the PlayStation 4's most beautiful exclusives. (Yeah it's on PC now, too - console exclusives, then.) Horizon Zero Dawn is a looker, indeed, and this book collects a load of fantastic art together for you to run your eyes over time and again. Now, how do we get a game that has the incredible, painterly look of all this luscious concept material?
