Today - September 29th, 2020 - marks the 25th anniversary of Sony's original PlayStation console in the UK. To mark its birthday, we're running a selection of PS1-centric content all week. Already you'll find our own top 10 games for the iconic system; 10 facts you might not have known about PlayStation; and a deep-dive into just who the real Lara Croft is. And there's much more to come!
But it's not all about us, reader. Far from it. Earlier in September we asked you to name your own favourite-ever PlayStation (1) game. Now we didn't leave this open to any and all nominations, as we'd never be able to process that.
Instead, we took 16 games - based on titles we regularly see being held up as special in our comments, and our own favourites of course - and put them to you on Twitter. And you voted, in your thousands. Four groups of four, with a winner in each going through to a final round. Makes sense, right?
Here's how it broke down, leading to a... complicated end result.
I can't recall whose idea it was to put Ape Escape in the running, here, but at least someone voted for it I guess. Crash Bandicoot 2 winning could be seen as an upset given that not a single Crash game makes our own Top 10 PlayStation Games - because Spyro is better than Crash and that's a fact. Metal Gear Solid is our number one and clearly it's popular with you, too - just not popular enough.
Dare I say it? I'm gonna say it. This was the group of death. We have Spider-Man fans on the team but there's no way it's a PS1 top-tenner, for us - but you lot, you love the 2000-released game (so you may want to read about how it basically set the standard for modern superhero games). We knew you liked it, that's why it's in the running, and it won. Bad luck to the other three, all of which are on the GAMINGbible Top 10 list but, despite clearly also being popular, just couldn't beat Peter Parker from the top spot.
No close-run thing here, as the highest-rated PlayStation (1) game of all time runs - or rather, rolls - away with it. Both it and Final Fantasy VII are on the GAMINGbible Top 10, so we're not super surprised to see them be the top two here. Tenchu and Soul Reaver come up a lot in our comments, which is why we offered them as choices - but obviously they're only standouts for a select few of you, and neither come close to making our expert (lol) Top 10.
You done played Symphony of the Night wrong here, readers. One of the greatest games of all time, and it's in last place. For shame. Now, you might say, that's just my opinion... But is it? Or is it the opinion of everyone who's played it? IDK. Nevermind, eh, there's always the chance for a recount around the PS1's 30th anniversary. Grand Theft Auto absolutely destroyed this group, which we didn't totally see coming. Sure, the franchise is huge, and has been for years... But was that original game really that good? Have you tried playing it lately? Capcom's Dino Crisis is another that regularly gets posted about in our comments - and we know there's a huge appetite for a remake. But it couldn't climb above GTA or Konami's creepy classic, Silent Hill.
So, yeah. We've a bit of a problem here. We saw the final results state that Crash Bandicoot 2 had beaten Grand Theft Auto by one percent, which you can see in this tweet. But when you look at the results 'live', now, with the same number of votes cast, GTA is the winner by 0.1%. With mild confusion amid the GB team, there's only one thing we can do here: they're both winners. So congratulations to Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back and Grand Theft Auto for being GAMINGbible readers' greatest PlayStation (1) games of all time; and to their makers, Naughty Dog and Rockstar (ahem, DMA Design). Personally, I don't know what's wrong with you people, but hey, it takes all sorts, and you love what you love, and that's what makes gaming great, and... CRASH IS RUBBISH, SEE YA.
