Red Dead Redemption fans will love these PlayStation Plus free games

Red Dead Redemption fans will love these PlayStation Plus free games

What do you play after Red Dead Redemption 2?

Fans of Red Dead Redemption who might be looking for a game to move on to now that their Wild West journey has come to an end might be wondering what’s out there. Well, quite a lot. There are plenty of games with that deep RPG feel and a hint of flavour that comes from the time period or additional genre.

Red Dead Redemption 2's shoes are big ones to fill, but there are some great games to follow it

We’ve got five great games you can find on PlayStation Plus’ subscriber catalogue that will go some way to scratching that Red Dead Redemption 2 itch.

Far Cry 6

This Ubisoft first-person shooter nowadays leans into light RPG mechanics backed by a deep story. The combination of these, plus the setting of a Caribbean revolution makes for a great title to lose yourself in. A starring role from Giancarlo Esposito elevates the plot somewhat but it’s the combat and exploration that is the real star of Far Cry 6. With a huge world to explore, you’ll come across danger from every angle via humans looking to stop your rise to topple the government, or wild animals hunting you. With lots of side quests and a levelling system, you’ll be in this world for quite some time.

Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus

While Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus doesn’t feature RPG mechanics, it’s the historical setting and story that will pull you in, even if the game eschews realism for arcade shooting gameplay. The game follows William ‘B.J’ Blazkowicz and his battle with the Nazi regime. The gunplay is top-tier, the action set pieces are mindblowing and the story balances the seriousness of the Nazi regime with outlandish moments that threaten to make you laugh the further you get into the plot.

Horizon Forbidden West

This sequel to Horizon Zero Dawn is an action-RPG developed as an exclusive for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. The game follows Aloy, a young woman exploring the post-apocalyptic Western United States. For a character-driven action game, this one stands shoulder to shoulder with Red Dead Redemption in how much you’ll invest into the central cast. Horizon Forbidden West is a lot more action-packed however, as you battle it out with massive machine creatures using a wealth of weaponry.

Assassin’s Creed Black Flag

For another period piece in gaming, you can’t ignore any of the Assassin’s Creed games, but if we had to choose one (and we do) it would be Black Flag. The Assassin’s Creed franchise has visited many different locales and time periods, but Black Flag combines these with a historic ‘way of life’. Much like being a cowboy is a way of life, so is being a pirate. There’s a great deal of depth in every area of Black Flag; from ship battles to the story of the Assassin brotherhood, plus there’s a lot brooding to be done.

Desperados III

Perhaps the biggest departure from the Red Dead Redemption gameplay is Desperados III which swaps third-person action for a top-down tactical RPG. The two meet in their Wild West settings. This is a very tactical game that requires lots of planning ahead of time, actioning combat by taking turns. You can however take some experiences from Red Dead Redemption in whether you tackle missions using stealth or all-out action.
