In an era of live-service games, it seems as though no title is safe after rumours reveal a Hogwarts Legacy sequel could receive the same treatment, much to fan’s dismay.
Released just over a year ago, Hogwarts Legacy is an action RPG inspired by the magical world of Harry Potter. Developed by Avalanche Software, the title went on to receive multiple nominations as well as receive praise for its nods to the much-loved movie and book series.

However, despite a sequel seemingly on the cards, it seems as though publishers Warner Bros. are straying away from the RPG genre in favour of the live-service game treatment. This is rumoured to be because of the AAA console market not generating enough income.

Although this news wouldn’t have been too disappointing just a few years back, hearing the words “live service” now comes with negative connotations thanks to recent titles such as Marvel’s Avengers and Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League.
Marvel’s Avengers was a live-service action-adventure game released back in 2020 and only managed to hit 31,165 concurrent players before it was taken offline in 2023.
As for Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, the fellow live-service title has been in a rough spot since it was first released earlier this year. With uninspiring gameplay, multiple in-game transactions and a too-short campaign, it recently hit its lowest player count so far.
As a result, if a Hogwarts Legacy sequel was to follow this format, it is safe to assume that it will also meet the same fate and fans agree.

One said: “Well that's more money saved if that's true, I'm so f**king tired of live service games. They're just as bad as pachinko machines”.
Another agreed, saying: “They just instantly killed my excitement for the sequel.”
Let us hope that Warner Bros. has a change of heart or Hogwarts Legacy 2 is already doomed to fail.
