16 years later, the OG Crysis still looks unbelievably good

If you’ve been into gaming for a long time, chances are you’ll have a couple of titles that just ooze nostalgia. For me, I can’t think about Croc: Legend of the Gobbos and The Simpsons: Hit & Run without falling into a nostalgic trip down memory lane. It’s the same way a particular album may remind you of a certain time in your life, I say as I emotionally listen to Speak Now (Taylor’s Version).

Reddit is the perfect place to reminisce about such favourites. To reflect on the joy they brought us, or discuss our hopes for these franchises in the future. The original Crysis is the latest game mentioned on Reddit’s neverending nostalgia dive - and it’s a great shout. User hailthecrowbar kicked the conversation off, writing, “This game came out 16 years ago,” and admittedly, it holds up way better than I expected. Those graphics were well ahead of their time.

Developed by Crytek and published by EA, Crysis is a first-person shooter that was released all the way back in 2007 for PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360. If you’re unfamiliar with the series, it’s set in a future where ancient alien structures have been discovered, buried deep inside the fictional Lingshan islands, near the coast of the Philippines. Players control Jake Dunn, also known by his callsign Nomad. Armed with a nanosuit, Dunn would fight both human and alien enemies.

Fans have plenty of praise for this title, even all these years later. User Time-Ladder4753 wrote, “For me, the more memorable thing from [the] first Crysis wasn't graphics, but that when you shoot trees, they break right where you shot them,” while gknight702 added, “The beginning half of [Crysis] when you fought humans was so much fun.”

JuanOnlyJuan wrote, “Yea, doing crazy stuff like ramping a truck into a building, jumping out in mid air and landing on the roof of a shack and then switching to MAXIMUM STRENGTH and meleeing the roof so it collapses on the occupants was just … ah, chef’s kiss.” TakikiMars_ joked, “”Can it run Crysis’ as a measure of hardware quality.” So true. What a gem.
