Adam Sandler pays touching tribute to 'sweetheart' Brendan Fraser

Brendan Fraser is the internet’s sweetheart. How did that come to be the case? No one really knows. We’ve just universally accepted that this 90s heartthrob is now a precious treasure that must be protected at all costs. Fraser is, of course, best known for his roles in The Mummy and George of the Jungle but lately, the actor has impressed critics in The Whale.

Directed by Darren Aronofsky, The Whale tells the story of a 600-pound social recluse called Charlie (Fraser) who attempts to rekindle his relationship with his 17-year-old daughter Ellie (Sadie Sink). Already, the film has received multiple standing ovations and there’s plenty of Oscar buzz surrounding Fraser’s performance. We’re thrilled to see Fraser thriving and so are many of the actor’s peers. Adam Sandler has shared a touching tribute.

Back in 1994, Sandler starred opposite Fraser in Airheads, a film about a ‘band of loser musicians’ who hijack a radio station to get their music on air. During a recent press conference for his new film Hustle, Sandler spoke about his friendship with Fraser which endures to this day. “He’s just so smart, such a deep guy, and he’s such a loving sweetheart,” Sandler said.

He continued, “We’ve been talking a lot lately and I couldn’t be happier for him. His performance, I saw [The Whale], is ridiculous. He’s always been great. He’s always been as deep as it gets. When we were doing Airheads, he was on a different trip than all of us. He really took [Airheads] serious. He took everything about the full growth of this character and his look and what each line meant. He was never messing around.”

“The fact that he got to make The Whale, and a bunch of great movies over the years, but the fact that it's at such a great crescendo for him right now is not a shock,” Sandler added. “I wish him the best - I hope every dream comes true for him. He's a good person. I wish him nothing but the greatest." Aw. That’s true friendship.
