Almost Half Of UK 'Horizon Forbidden West' Sales Were Digital

Oh look, it’s that massive, highly anticipated game that everyone’s excited about! It’s only just released, and it’s what all the gamers on the internet have been talking about. Wait, what do you mean they’ve already forgotten about it?

Poor Aloy. Her latest adventure has been praised as an excellent sequel to 2017’s Horizon Zero Dawn, and yet just over a week on from its release, everyone’s already moved on to Elden Ring. I mean, I can’t really say I blame them, given how groundbreaking the latter is, but still.

Even if the attention has very quickly shifted away from it though, Forbidden West is still doing really well. Not only was it the best selling boxed game in the UK last week, but it was also the best-selling digital game, too.

According to a report from GamesIndustry.biz, the latest games sale data has shown that just short of half of the game’s sales (49%, to be exact) were digital, via the PSN store. Just for comparison’s sake, those digital sales are double what Zero Dawn managed in March 2017, the month after its release, and this is only in the span of a week.

The PS5 version of the game is continuing to be the most popular, too - reportedly, 67% of the digital sales were for the new-gen version. Those are really similar figures to last week’s physical sales - around two thirds of the boxed copies were for the PS5 editions. On one hand, that’s hardly surprising - the game looks significantly better on there, but equally, anyone who buys the PS4 version, which costs £10 less, can upgrade for free. Be sure to keep that in mind if you’ve not already bought it yourself, anyway.

As I said at the start, chances are, basically everyone is going to be shifting their focus over to Elden Ring now, but we still think Forbidden West is worth playing - in our review, we said that it “takes everything that worked in its acclaimed predecessor and builds upon it in spectacular style”. So we still love you, Aloy, even if your game’s release timing was a bit poor.
