'New World' Has Lost Nearly Half Its Players Since Launch

Amazon Games' New World has lost a lot of players since its October release.

Amazon Games’ New World has been one of the most successful live service launches of the past year, on the surface. The new MMO was notoriously difficult to get into in the first week or two after launch, with ridiculous waiting times and server shortages. But now the hype around the game has calmed down and it’s settling into its groove, it's lost about half of its average concurrent players.

As reported by Forbes, New World’s numbers have been declining since launch - losing an average of 135,000 concurrent players per week. By looking at the numbers on Steamcharts on Sundays for the past month or so, you can see the number of concurrent players has fallen from 913,000 to 508,000 which is a pretty sharp drop.

However, that’s not to say players will still keep falling another 135,000 in the coming weeks, it’s likely to slow down even more and then stabilise somewhere, but the question is, where? It’s absolutely normal for a game to see its highest numbers right after launch and then decline but with an MMO it’s imperative that it stops declining and keeps a core playerbase. 

Will New World’s playerbase be 100k people? More? Less? Will the players who have already been burned out on grinding to level 60 come back when Amazon releases new content? Will new players still come to the game even though a large portion of their peers will have already settled into the world? Who knows. 

But one thing is for certain - Amazon Games needs to spend some time fixing up the game’s plethora of bugs and glitches that its fans are finding. Just this past week, it was discovered that the game’s general chat box could be used for coding which meant a line of code could crash the games of an unsuspecting player.
