An Xbox Exclusive Is 2021's Top Rated Game

Like it or not, 2022 is coming towards us like a freight train. I haven't even finished processing everything that happened in 2020, let alone 2021.

Anyway, with just over a week to go until the end of the year, it's looking like the top rated games of 2021 on Metacritic are pretty much set. And it's an Xbox exclusive that takes the coveted top spot!

Forza Horizon 5 is the highest rated new game this year (we're not including ports or re-releases), with an impressive aggregate score of 92. It's user score isn't to be sniffed at either, with a stellar 8.6 based on over 2,600 reviews.

In GAMINGbible's review of the open-world racer, our very own Dean Abdou called it "the best entry in the series yet", and a stunning showcase for Microsoft's new-gen console.

"There is a lot in here that will keep you busy for days and weeks on end, in the best way possible," he wrote. "This game builds on everything that already made this series such a success and leaves you inundated, in a good way, with so many activities. It’s fun to play, stunning to watch, and even while writing this all I want to do is jump straight back into it. Whether you’re a fan of racing games or not, Forza Horizon 5 is a must play, as it really is a unique experience."

It's worth noting there are a handful of games that sit above Forza Horizon 5. The recent upgraded version of the excellent Disco Elysium boasts an incredible 97, while ports of Hades, The House In Fata Morgana, and Tetris Effect also have higher scores. But as far as original 2021 games go, Forza Horizon 5 is the clear winner. Congratulations, Playground Games! I, for one, can't bloomin' wait to see what you do with Fable.
