The Lord Of The Rings: Andy Serkis down to return as Gollum for new movies

What would The Lord Of The Rings be without its iconic cast of characters? Whilst there are so many to choose from, like Legolas or Gandalf, one of the most memorable has to be the warped and deranged hobbit Gollum, an important character in the story as he was a long-time possessor of the “one ring.”

Played by the incredible Andy Serkis, Gollum’s character quickly became a fan favourite, with Serkis winning multiple awards for his portrayal of the creature. Now, years after The Lord Of The Rings and its prequel film series The Hobbit came to an end, Andy Serkis has said he’d be up for returning to the role in future films.

Speaking in an interview with Hollywood Reporter, Serkis said: “I’ve spent so many years making films with them. I love their sensibility and their take; it’s filmmaking on a different kind of level.

“You live and breathe it. And so, yes, if some opportunity were to come up, it would be an amazing thing.”

Recently Warner Bros announced that several Lord Of The Rings films are now in the works, though it’s unknown what the films will be about, and if they’ll be precursors or continuations to the trilogies that came before them.

That being said, Gollum could definitely return if the upcoming films are set before the events of The Lord Of The Rings and The Hobbit, given the creature is over 600 years old in those films due to the corruption of the ring. Whether the story has room for him amongst a cast of presumably new and returning characters is another question entirely. If the “one ring to rule them all” makes an appearance, there’s a good chance that Gollum won’t be too far behind, given his psychotic obsession with the object.

Regardless it’d be nice to see him again, and it’d be a good opportunity to expand his back story following what we already learned during the films. It’d be cool to see more of his gradual transformation from a hobbit into the pale and feral monster we all know him as.
