'Arma 4' Is Officially In Development, First Details Announced

Alongside the release of a new Arma game, Arma Reforger, Bohemia Interactive confirmed that Arma 4 is on the way.

It’s been a hot minute since the last full Arma game released. The first-person tactical military shooter series is known for offering challenging gameplay with complex controls, but a super satisfying experience for anyone willing to persevere and get good at it.

Arma 3 came out all the way back in 2013 (although it received a number of expansions and DLC all the way up to 2019), and fans have been drumming their fingers waiting for Arma 4 since. Now, finally, Bohemia Interactive have confirmed that the fourth instalment is on the way, almost nine years after the release of its predecessor.

Arma 4 doesn't have a trailer just yet, but the newly-announced Arma Reforger does - check it out below.

As reported by Polygon, specifics about Arma 4 are rather thin on the ground - or so it may seem on the surface. In the same announcement, Bohemia Interactive both confirmed and released a different game, Arma Reforger, which may actually be able to give us some proper insight into that fourth main title.

Arma Reforger is the first step towards Arma 4 and a versatile, creative, fully-moddable platform for the future, offering a glimpse of things to come,” Bohemia Interactive said.

Reforger is set during the Cold War, and sees Soviet forces battle it out against US troops on the 51-square-kilometre island of Everon (a location which long term Bohemia Interactive fans might recognise from Operation Flashpoint: Cold War Crisis, which released before Arma 1). It uses the studio’s new Enfusion tech engine, and is being used as a way to “showcase the studio’s progress” on it. Presumably, this means that Arma 4 will probably also run on the Enfusion engine (or an upgraded version of it), so in terms of how the game runs, playing Reforger now might be able to give us some hints into what we can expect from the unreleased title, especially given that it claims to offer “a glimpse of things to come”.

Unfortunately, there’s been no release window given for Arma 4, so we might be waiting some time for it yet. But, it is officially happening, and those wanting to try out Arma Reforger can do so right now on Steam and Xbox.
