Assassin's Creed Black Flag just got a massive free update

Assassin's Creed Black Flag just got a massive free update on Steam and Ubisoft Connect, but there's an air of mystery attached.

The Assassin’s Creed Black Flag mystery continues. Days after rumours hit the internet suggesting that a remake was in the works at Ubisoft, the game has received a major update on Ubisoft Connect and Steam. The issue is, despite the download’s hefty size, no one seems to know what it’s actually changed.

To recap, if rumours are to be believed, a remake of Assassin’s Creed Black Flag is reportedly in the works at Ubisoft. It’s one of 11 Assassin’s Creed games said to be in development. Project Nebula has also seemingly been leaked with insiders teasing that the game will be set across India, the Aztec Empire, and around the Mediterranean. Next up on the horizon though is Assassin’s Creed Mirage which will release later this year. Mercifully, the game’s map size has been confirmed and it’s set to be the smallest AC map in years, but let’s hop back to that strange ol’ Black Flag update.

Take a look at Assassin’s Creed Mirage in action below.

The update was noticed by Reddit user Old-Interaction780 who wrote, “Assassin’s Creed 4 Black Flag patch on Steam [was] 2.6GB. What was the patch for [...] and why was it so big?” It’s a good question. Fellow user BenSF93 wrote, “Also got a 500MB update on Ubisoft Connect and now the game only works in windowed mode.”

Alternatively, TheLastArchmage added, “Steam always makes these random updates to the backend that don’t actually do anything inside the game, just ignore it.” That hasn’t convinced fellow players though, given that Black Flag is a hot topic right now and it’s not something that’s happened to any other Assassin’s Creed titles.

In related Assassin’s Creed news, fan-favourite Ezio Auditore will soon return in the upcoming Assassin’s Creed Nexus, and the free-to-play Assassin’s Creed Codename Jade recently opened a call for playtesters. There’s so much to enjoy.
