'Assassin's Creed Origins' Is Getting A Free New-Gen Upgrade

The excellent Assassin's Creed Origins looks set for an upgrade on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series consoles, according to a recent tweet from Ubisoft.

Last year the publisher released a new-gen version of Assassin's Creed Valhalla that boasted enhanced graphics, improved framerates and resolution, speedier loading times, and more. Not long after that, we got a souped-up version of 2017's Assassin's Creed Odyssey.

While not quite as substantial an upgrade as Valhalla (Odyssey was never designed with new-gen consoles in mind), it still boosted Kassandra's adventure through Ancient Greece to a silky smooth 60fps. Not too shabby at all.

Now, it seems Origins is set to receive the same treatment. In a tweet celebrating the Assassin's Creed franchise, Ubisoft thanked fans for their "continued support, passion & vigilance". It also briefly teased the future, adding that it's currently "looking into adding 60FPS support for Assassin's Creed Origins," and telling folk to "stay tuned"

Exactly when this new-gen update might drop has yet to be confirmed, but I think we can safely expect to arrive early in the New Year. Assassin's Creed Odyssey's new-gen update dropped in August this year and didn't exactly do much aside from give the game a framerate boost, but that's more than enough of an excuse for me to jump right back into Origins.

Interestingly, Ubisoft also recently released the first of its Crossover Stories - free DLC quests that will bring together Assassins from previous games in the series' long history.

The first of these Crossover Stories, available right now, takes place across Assassin's Creed Odyssey and Assassin's Creed Valhalla, and will bring Kassandra face-to-face with Eivor. I probably wouldn't be all that surprised if an Origins new-gen update was timed to release alongside a second Crossover Story starring Bayek, would you? Watch this space.
