Assassin's Creed Red is the end of the series as we currently know it

Ubisoft hasn't officially announced when Assassin’s Creed Red will be released and with speculation mounting a recent rumour claims that an end of an era is coming.

In recent months, we’ve heard plenty of rumours regarding what Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed Red may or may not bring to the table. It will reportedly feature two playable protagonists, it will have live-service elements (surprise), and recently, it seems that its full name has been revealed.

All we really know for sure is that it will be set in feudal Japan, a location that fans of the Assassin’s Creed series have long been begging for. However, a new rumour claims that Assassin’s Creed Red will see the end of a recent series formula.

As shared in a Reddit post via Resetera, user John Harker (Knows Things) claims that Assassin’s Creed Red will see the end of the Assassin’s Creed Origins formula. That claim wasn't elaborated on further but it might be safe to assume that Assassin’s Creed Valhalla may have been the last of what is considered to be the “RPG trilogy” which began with Origins in 2017.

Arguably, we could say that the groundwork for the Assassin’s Creed RPG trilogy was set with Assassin’s Creed Unity and Assassin’s Creed Syndicate but that formula cranked it up a notch in 2017. When Assassin’s Creed Mirage was released in 2023, it had taken the series back to its roots in respect of having less RPG mechanics, a much smaller map and more of an emphasis on stealth.

After Assassin’s Creed Red, it is expected that Hexe will be the next game in the series and with other rumours claiming that Hexe will leave “enormous open worlds behind” it perhaps plays into the speculation that Red may ditch the Origins formula.

Of course, as with any unconfirmed rumour, we should take them with a pinch of salt until proven otherwise. That being said, hopefully, Ubisoft will reveal new details on Assassin’s Creed Red and Assassin’s Creed Hexe in the coming months.

In the meantime, will can rely on Assassin’s Creed Mirage to keep us busy with Ubisoft releasing a generous helping of content updates which includes a New Game Plus and permadeath mode.
