Perhaps due to the recent success of Baldur’s Gate 3, Netflix has set its sights on securing the rights to a live-action adaptation of the Dungeons & Dragons inspired setting.
Since the success of HBO’s The Last of Us and at least the first season of The Witcher, video game adaptations are all the rage. However, with video game adaptations comes a legion of dedicated fans that are prepared to be disappointed. Luckily, Netflix is feeling brave enough to tackle it.

According to a report by Giant Freaking Robot, Netflix is in talks to securing the rights to the Baldur’s Gate series. It is unclear if this will mean a series or movie is on the cards but either way, it will be based upon the Larian Studios IP. Set in the Forgotten Realms, Baldur’s Gate is a series of TTRPG games that first launched way back in 1998. Since then, it has welcomed another ten instalments including the most recent Baldur’s Gate 3. As a result, Netflix has a lot of material to work with.

If this goes ahead, it won’t be the first live-action adaptation set in the Forgotten Realms. Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves was released in March this year and saw Chris Pine lead a band of unlikely adventurers on a quest to retrieve a lost relic. The movie was met with rave reviews and led fans itching for more Dungeons & Dragons inspired media. Now thanks to Netflix, they might be in luck.
It remains to be seen if Netflix will secure the rights to Baldur’s Gate but even if it does, it is no stranger to cancelling popular shows. It could also follow in the footsteps of The Witcher adaptation and replace its lead stars. Either way, bringing the video game series to Netflix will be a sure way of bringing in a new fan base. Let’s hope it will be worth it.
