Baldur's Gate 4 isn't happening, developer confirms

It isn't good news

In the saddest news, it appears that Baldur’s Gate 4 won’t be happening. At least, it won’t be developed by Larian Studios who helmed the third installment of the franchise and managed to capture the hearts of millions last year.

On top of this disappointing news we also now have it confirmed that Baldur’s Gate 3 won’t receive any DLC or expansions. The official word came down from the CEO of Larian Studios, Swen Vincke, who recently commented on the future of the game at GDC. It seems work had started on DLC, but was abandoned.

Baldur's Gate 3 scooped up plenty of awards for the brilliance it showed

It appears that discussions about Baldur’s Gate 4 were happening, but Vincke noted that the team appeared to be working towards it because they felt they had to, rather than wanted to. The team will now be taking a well-deserved holiday before returning to work on something completely new.

The future of Baldur’s Gate and indeed Dungeons & Dragons is up in the air and will only land when Wizards of the Coast decide which studio next gets to take on the RPG franchise. The first two games in the series were developed by BioWare, so it’s not a new situation that a different developer takes on the challenge.

What’s next for Larian Studios? Some fans are speculating a return to Divinity: Original Sin, while others believe that a whole new RPG could be in the early stages. There’s no official word on what’s next, but fans can rest easy that the studio will create something magical.

Of course, it’s always disappointing to hear your favourite game will no longer be supported, but games like Baldur’s Gate 3 are vast, long-running projects that take years to get right. It takes a lot out of the studio and the teams, especially when achieving something as perfect as Baldur’s Gate 3.
