Battlefield 2042 has had a rocky launch period. It is one of the worst reviewed games on Steam, and not only do some previous Battlefield entries have more concurrent players, but the game might now be going free-to-play in response to its poor performance. To compound this, there seems to be issues with the new Zombie Survival mode.
One of the major complaints surrounding Battlefield 2042 is that the XP is unbalanced, with slow progress leading to player frustration. However, one of the more popular in-game modes, Portal, allows community made modes with their own XP hand outs. Some of these such as the Battle Royale mode have become more popular than the base game.

Another one of these creations was Zombie Survival mode where players took out waves of zombies in teams of four until help arrived. However, due to the generally unbalanced XP of Battlefield 2042, players soon saw this new mode as a good place to farm XP, even creating bots to do so. This has led the mode to be removed and senior design director Justin Wiebe, has said in tweets "I’m not going to lie, this one shouldn't have gotten through our review process."
We’ve removed the Zombie’s mode and replaced with Gun Game. Hopefully we can fix it in the future and keep it in alignment with standard game progression. We’ve also tightened our review process to make sure this doesn’t happen again. Thanks for your patience and understanding.— Justin Wiebe (@JA_Wiebe) January 21, 2022
Wiebe has previously sympathised with players and admitted that fixes to the game are taking too long. The slow progress of the team may be one of the reasons this unbalanced mode made it through the review process. He further claims the team will "tighten" the process and blamed the oversight on the teams excitement for the mode. "I think our desire to create a fun zombies mode clouded our ability to see such a simple thing like the impact it would have on progression."
The developers have replaced Zombie Survival with the series classic Gun Game for the time being. Though they do hope to "fix" it bringing the XP in line with the standard game progression. This way players who have decided not to farm XP will not be disadvantaged in other campaign modes.
