Battlefield 2042 was easily one of the most-antipcated releases of this year. DICE and EA's futuristic military shooter looked like it was set to be the first truly "next-gen" FPS, with huge online matches and massive, dynamic maps.

Unfortunately, its recent release hasn't quite gone as well as DICE might have hoped. While there's still time for the developer to turn it around with updates and fixes, Battlefield 2042 is, as it stands, one of the worst-reviewed Steam games of all time. Ouch.

According to data complied by Steam250, a website that collects all of the user reviews on Steam to determine the worst ranking titles available there, Battlefield 2042 has already found its way into the bottom ten worst-reviewed Steam games ever. At present, it has an average score of 26%.

Meanwhile, a quick glance at the game's actual Steam store page reveals it has "Mostly Negative" reviews, out of over 40,000. So where did it all go wrong for Battlefield 2042?

"At this moment, NO. I have loved Battlefield so much, but it seems ill be sticking with Battlefield 4 for more years to come," reads the current top-rated review for the latest instalment. The user goes on to outline a number of missing features, including no single-player, server browser, general chat, or persistent lobbies, and more. Like, a lot more. This echoes a recent viral Reddit post that complied an alarmingly long list of features not currently available in Battlefield 2042.

"Hot stinky poopy garbage," adds another, less helpful review.

"Dumpster Fire. Yet another huge game disappointment of 2021," remarked another reviewer. "I'm going back to SQUAD."

For its part, DICE is already rolling out updates to improve various aspects of the game. Even so, much like the recent GTA: The Trilogy - The Definitive Edition debacle, you have to wonder if the damage has already been done.
