'Battlefield 2042' Specialist Confirmed To Be Non-Binary By Devs

EA and DICE have announced that one of the Specialists in Battlefield 2042, Emma “Sundance” Rosier, is non-binary.

Sundance was revealed among the rest of the remaining selectable characters in the upcoming first-person shooter, with Rao, Dozer, Ji-Soo Paik, and Angel. Rao is a Recon-class Specialist who is able to hack enemy tech and highlight enemies in the surrounding area with his Trojan Network. Dozer’s nickname tells you everything you need to know as he’s a force of nature with his SOB-8 Ballistic Shield. Paik’s Threat Perception tags enemies dealing damage to her no matter how far away they are and Angel is a Support Specialist who resupplies allies and speeds up revive times.

As an Assault Specialist, Sundance has a wingsuit to zip from objective to objective in the blink of an eye, as well as Smart Explosives that target enemy aircraft. When fans noticed that descriptions of Sundance used “they/them,” lead community manager Adam Freeman confirmed that the character is non-binary. If you’re not familiar with the term, non-binary means that the person doesn’t identify with either the conventions of masculinity or femininity (read more here).

The topic of representation in video games has gained more and more momentum over the past couple of years, from the side of the developers as well as the stories in the games themselves. In this regard, actor Jeff Steitzer — who you’ll recognise as the announcer in all of the Halo games — asked that studios take those important steps to ensure that their entire player base is represented, not only the loudest minority.

Transgender characters are found in games like Borderlands 3, Dishonored 2, The Last Of Us Part 2, Dragon Age Inquisition, Assassin’s Creed Syndicate, Tell Me Why and more. As a selectable character in a online multiplayer title, Sundance won’t take centre stage like some of these other examples, but the confirmation that they are non-binary will have lifted up players who feel like they haven’t been seen in the Battlefield franchise before.

EA has taken the time to assuage the concerns of the community following the technical and visual glitches that players struggled with in the beta. One of the explanations for the state of the game was that this version was sourced from much earlier in the summer and the problems that were found have already been solved, but the publisher has been happy to hear the feedback from the players.
