Blizzard Address Concerns Over 'Diablo 4' Microtransactions

Diablo has been having a bit of a time of it in the last couple of weeks, thanks to the positively disastrous launch of the free-to-play mobile title, Diablo Immortal. Well, in the Netherlands and Belgium, it didn’t even manage to launch at all, thanks to loot box laws, which is probably telling enough as to why it’s been going down so poorly everywhere else.

Last week, after it was unveiled that fully upgrading a single character in Immortal could cost players an astronomical £88,000, the game became Metacritic’s lowest rated game, with a user score of 0.5/10, which, I’ll be honest, I didn’t even know was possible. Following that, it’s understandable that fans would be worried about the state of the upcoming main series title, Diablo IV, and as reported by The Outerhaven, Blizzard have addressed the situation.

D4 is coming out as a full price game built strictly for PC/console audiences. The game is huge & there will be tons of content after launch for all players,” global community lead for Diablo, Adam Fletcher, wrote on Twitter. “Paid content is built around optional cosmetic items [and] eventually full expansions. We will be sharing more info soon!”

Following this, Diablo’s general manager, Rod Fergusson, posted a similar Tweet: “To be clear, D4 is a full price game built for PC/PS/Xbox audiences,” he wrote. “We are committed to delivering an incredible breadth of content after launch, for years to come, anchored around optional cosmetic items [and] full story driven expansions. More details soon. Necro blog tomorrow!”

Last night, during the Xbox & Bethesda Games Showcase, amongst a tonne of other things, it was announced that Diablo IV will be releasing some time in 2023. Even with the devs’ words of reassurance, though, there’s no doubt that some fans are going to be a little sceptical about this one until we know more about it.
