A Classic PS2 Franchise Is Finally Returning On PS5

A classic PlayStation 2-era franchise is making its way to PlayStation 5 later this year, according to a newly discovered ESRB rating.

Released way back in 2002, BloodRayne was a brutal hack-and-slash action game in which players took on the role of a half-vampire called Rayne to battle against all manner of supernatural threats. The original game was enough of a hit that it ultimately spawned a strong 2004 sequel, as well as a handful of movies and comic books.

Despite this run of success as a cult favourite throughout the 00s, BloodRayne has effectively been on ice since 2010. Although that's started to change in recent years

Publisher Ziggurat Interactive picked up the IP in 2020, and has been working to revive the BloodRayne franchise alongside original developer Terminal Reality.

In November last year, an enhanced edition of the original game called BloodRayne: ReVamped was released for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch. Now, it looks as if this remaster is headed to PS5, after the ESRB slapped an M for Mature rating on a new-gen version of the game. This will undoubtedly be the exact same version of the game currently available on other consoles, to be clear, so don't go in expecting a bunch of shiny PS5-specific features and you won't be disappointed.

And while it's always fun to revisit the games we played growing up, it is also worth noting that the general consensus seems to be the original BloodRayne hasn't aged particularly well. Not that this is a huge shocker, given it's a remaster of a 20-year-old game, but it should be stressed BloodRayne: ReVamped is an enhanced port, rather than a Resident Evil 2-style overhaul. But who knows? Maybe one day we'll get the full-on BloodRayne revival/reboot we've been dreaming of.
