Once upon a time, a Breaking Bad video game inspired by the chaos of Grand Theft Auto was in the works with creator Vince Gilligan and producer Jenn Carroll.

I know you fell to your knees at Walmart reading that sentence. Now, this isn't to discount the Breaking Bad strategy game, released for Android and iOS platforms, but concepts like this Unreal Engine 5 one clearly show that there's an appetite for a more grandiose game set in Albuquerque.

Last year, we got the chance to chat to actor Giancarlo Esposito about his character in Far Cry 6 and the potential video games have to tell powerful, political stories. Take a look below:

Speaking on the Inside the Gilliverse podcast, Gilligan revealed that there was a serious push with "quite a few attempts" to take Breaking Bad and transform it into something like Grand Theft Auto. "I'm not much of a video game player, but how can you not know Grand Theft Auto," he said on the subject. "I remember saying to the guys, that are off running Apple now, who said yes originally to Breaking Bad, 'Who owns Grand Theft Auto? Can't you have a module, can there be a Breaking Bad [game]?' [It] still makes sense to me!"

Gilligan also praised the commitment that Carroll had for the concepts. “She put a lot of energy and a lot of effort and a lot of talent into writing three or four different stories for three or four different video games including the VR thing," continued the creator. "There were a lot of people hours poured into that." "Making a video game is damn hard. What little I learned about it through this process, it literally takes years and millions of dollars. Especially when you’re trying to break new ground with VR and whatnot," explained Gilligan. "Never quite came to fruition. It’s a shame.” Seeing that fans are shocked that the game didn't get off the ground, perhaps the renewed interest will give a possible project the momentum it requires. Watch this space.
