Brendan Fraser lands Golden Globe nomination but will not attend the ceremony

As is the case with practically everyone on the internet, we’re big fans of Brendan Fraser over here at GAMINGbible. What can I say? The guy is a wholesome king - and he’s had a whirlwind couple of months. Fraser skyrocketed to fame in projects like The Mummy and George of the Jungle, but it’s his latest flick The Whale that’s generating a ton of much-deserved critical acclaim.

Directed by Darren Aronofsky, The Whale tells the story of a 600-pound social recluse called Charlie (Fraser) who attempts to rekindle his relationship with his 17-year-old daughter Ellie (Sadie Sink). Already, Fraser has received multiple standing ovations for his performance - reducing the actor to tears - and now, he’s also officially a Golden Globe nominee.

The Golden Globes officially kick off the prestigious ‘Awards Season’, so those coveted Oscar nominations will also drop in the next few weeks. Just as we all suspected, Fraser has officially been nominated for ‘Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture, Drama.’ Needless to say, we’re thrilled to see Fraser go from success to success, but don’t expect to see him giving a heartwarming speech at the ceremony should he win.

In recent weeks, Fraser confirmed that he would not attend the Golden Globes ceremony after suffering an alleged sexual assault by the former president of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), Philip Berk. The HFPA is the body responsible for the awards. Fraser reported that at a lunch at the Beverly Hills Hotel in 2003, Berk assaulted him in a crowded room.

Berk later wrote a letter of apology to Fraser. The HFPA responded to the claims that Fraser had been “inappropriately touched” saying that it was meant to be “a joke and not a sexual advance.” The actor was blocked out of Hollywood for several years after raising awareness about the alleged assault.

During his recent press tour for The Whale, Fraser said he would not attend the Golden Globes as, “My mother didn’t raise a hypocrite,” adding that “I have more history with the Hollywood Foreign Press Association than I have respect for the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.” I’m sure fans and peers alike will respect and understand the actor’s decision.
