For the past 20 years, Activision has released a Call of Duty game every single year, a streak that’ll be continuing this year as well.
Activision recently announced plans for a “full annual premium release” for its infamous Call of Duty franchise, but details on what the game will be, as well as which team will be in charge of making it, are largely unknown. In recent years, Call of Duty games left a lot to be desired, with some previously released titles lacking in terms of content, as well as featuring their fair-share of bugs and glitches.
Despite this, the franchise continues to dominate the charts upon a new release, typically selling millions of copies across Xbox, PlayStation and PC. Additionally, there are now plans to start releasing Call of Duty games on the Nintendo Switch, despite insiders claiming it won’t be possible.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II (2022) was one of the most successful COD games in recent memory, earning $1 billion only 10 days after its release, and quickly climbing to the top of the charts, even surpassing the game of the year, Elden Ring.

Whether the upcoming entry into the series will receive the same kind of success is unknown, as nothing official has been said about it apart from the fact that it exists - something that was originally in doubt. Rumours speculate that the studio Sledgehammer Games will be leading its development, and further rumours indicate that it will have some relation to the Modern Warfare series.
Historically, Call of Duty games are usually announced between May and June, with a release happening later that year typically being the norm. It’s obviously not confirmed if the developers will be sticking to this formula this year, but it does make it likely that we’ll hear more very soon, possibly in the next few weeks.
In the meantime, Activision will likely have its hands full with its acquisition by Microsoft, which is facing some pushback.
