Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Gameplay Revealed, Looks Incredibly Realistic

Well well well. We knew this one would be intense, and we were not let down. As part of the opening night of Summer Game Fest 2022, we got our first proper look at the Infinity Ward-developed Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II in action. And it is, well… It’s Call of Duty, make no mistake about that.

Which is to say: this is very realistic, incredibly loud, dramatically dynamic stuff - as you expect from a series with one of the biggest budgets in all of gaming. There are returning fan-favourite Task Force 141 characters like Ghost, Gaz, Soap and Price - something we already knew from the previous trailer - but they’ve never looked or sounded quite like this. Drink in the Dark Water mission gameplay below, but give your eardrums the night off afterwards.

Here’s the first full gameplay trailer for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II - strap in, it's a long one

Reads the description for this trailer: “An oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico is storing the cargo that could spark a global conflict. Task Force 141 found intel that shows missiles hidden on board and have dispatched a team of Soap, Ghost, and Mexican Special Forces Colonel Alejandro Vargas, along with Shadow Company, enter a ship full of well-armed AQ enemies to locate the controls for a missile bound for the US.”

Modern Warfare II is using all-new tech to power things like its water dynamics, which as you'll see are pretty dang impressive. Water, good, is what we're saying. An open beta for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II will initially be offered as an exclusive for PlayStation 4 and PS5 players, sometime in the near future, with other platforms gaining access later. Alongside this new standalone title, Call of Duty is also overhauling its free-to-play Warzone experience, which is going into a 2.0 version and crossing over to mobile.

The campaign for Modern Warfare II will take players on a global journey with near-photo-real environments bringing an all-new level of realism. Activision’s emphasis for this release is on teamwork, hence the somewhat janky but well-intentioned tagline of “the ultimate weapon is team” - which isn’t to say that MWII isn’t incredibly militaristic, but with Russia’s brutal invasion of Ukraine remaining in global headlines, it’s obvious that the publisher would want to focus on fun and playing with pals over the IRL horrors of war.
