Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Steam reviews finally tip into 'overwhelmingly negative'

Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Steam reviews finally tip into 'overwhelmingly negative'

It keeps getting worse for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.

The Call of Duty series is without question one of the most popular and lucrative properties in the video game industry. However, despite its success, it’s not a property that is popular with everyone.

The most recent entry in the series is the sequel to the 2019 reboot, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II which was released in 2022. For the most part, MWII was well received from critics with Metacritic scores averaging the mid to high 70s at launch. Yet, in the months that followed its launch, the reception from fans has dwindled.

Why are fans becoming disgruntled with Modern Warfare II? It seems there are a number of reasons why and it mostly looks to be related to the free-to-play battle royale, Warzone 2.

Despite Activision’s efforts to clamp down on cheaters using hacks, mods and exploits, it still remains an issue that is putting off many players returning the to Al Mazrah map. What’s more, fans are becoming increasingly frustrated with questionable Operator DLC bundles in its multiplayer modes with claims of egregious pricing as well as accusations of pay-to-win advantages.

The most recent grievance that players have is in regards to the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II Steam page on PC or at least, what it is now. If you Google search the ‘Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II’ Steam page, instead of taking you to its dedicated MWII page, it now directs you to a new Call of Duty hub. So, what’s the issue?

According to the community, Activision has changed the MWII Steam page in an attempt to hide poor reviews. At the time of writing, its Steam page has sunk into ‘Overwhelmingly Negative’ reviews, but it seems that Activision’s attempts to hide those poor reviews aren't working, because the new hub page has already tipped into ‘Mixed’ reviews from its fanbase, and it’s expected to dip further in the coming days.

The Modern Warfare II Steam page is plagued with reviews such as: “Re-branded the original MWII to Call of Duty [COD HQ] to hide the negative reviews that plague the store page. Hard to stomach that this company has fallen so far from grace,” said user Cro. “Imagine having to create a new game page because the launch was so bad that the review stats can't be any better than mixed,” exclaimed Archion.

It remains to be seen how Activision will respond to this wave of negative MWII Steam reviews, but we assume that it cannot create new pages forever. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II and Warzone 2 are out now for PC, PlayStation and Xbox.
