Press F to feel bad about war crimes

Call Of Duty: Vanguard isn’t even out yet, but fans are already eagerly looking ahead to 2022’s instalment: Infinity Ward’s Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.

While Activision has yet to confirm exactly what next year’s Call Of Duty will be, multiple reliable insiders are standing firm by the claim that it will be a sequel to 2019’s Modern Warfare reboot. Yes, that means there will be two Modern Warfares and two Modern Warfare 2s. Yes, that will get confusing.

While we await further info on the next game, leakers have been merrily sharing whatever they can get their hands on. Over on Twitter, a consistently reliable source by the name of @RalphsValve has just dropped a massive - and we mean massive - amount of info on Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.

The usual caveats first: take all rumours with a pinch of salt, and remember that even if some of these predictions are correct as of right now, things change during development. They develop. It’s what they do.

Now, onto the good stuff! Ralph shared a long thread that goes into potential story details, multiplayer features, maps, weapons, Warzone updates, and so much more besides. I’ll share the big stuff with you here, but be sure to take a look at the entire thread for yourself.

Firstly, Ralph corroborates earlier rumours that Modern Warfare 2022’s campaign will see players taking on the Cartel. There’s a much greater emphasis on player choice, it seems. One example given is a mission in which you infiltrate the house of a drug lord. You can go in all guns blazing, or take a more tactical approach - but the choices you make will determine who on your team lives and who dies.

It also sounds like there’s a much greater focus on realism. Ralph mentions that your character will be “visibly scared stiff” during intense moments in the story, and that the gore will be unlike anything we’ve seen in a Call Of Duty before.

Returning characters include Price, Shepherd, Soap, and Roach. Of course some of these guys have yet to appear in the rebooted universe, so it’ll be interesting to see how different they are from their original trilogy counterparts.

As far as multiplayer is concerned, fans of the original Modern Warfare 2 will be thrilled to discover that a number of fan-favourite maps are returning. Favela, Highrise, and Terminal are all namechecked. Field Upgrades are also set to make a comeback, and Ralph teases a “Floor Is Lava” mode which sounds like it could be a laugh.

That’s the big stuff for now, but do be sure to take a look through the rest of the thread in its entirety. And remember: pinch of salt.
