'Call Of Duty: Vanguard' Has A Monstrous File Size On Xbox

So, that streaming tech... when does that go live again?

Hang on. It looks like Call Of Duty: Vanguard will take up an unseemly amount of storage on your Xbox. Didn’t Activision say that this wasn’t going to happen this time?

Spoiler: it did. Citing the power of “on-demand texture streaming tech,” Vanguard wouldn’t see the same issues as Modern Warfare and Black Ops Cold War, two games that soaked up console storage like red wine on a white tablecloth. The state of the extreme file sizes became so bad that the fact that a 500GB PlayStation 4 might not have enough space for those two and Warzone was… kind of funny.

Unfortunately, it seems that this streaming technology isn’t active at the moment, according to this photo of Vanguard installing on an Xbox Series X. Reddit user ceassho showed that the base game weighs in at 72.6 GB. While the console is advertised to possess a terabyte of storage, this actually works out to be about 802 GB of usable storage owing to the operating system and things like that.

“What’s the fuss about?”, you might think. Even subtracting 72 GB from 802 GB leaves you with a lot left over. That’s not necessarily what we’re focusing on here. Players are keenly aware that the game will swell in file size with a day one patch and as more and more updates roll out to support Vanguard with exciting post-launch content.

Furthermore, there might be other large games that the player wants to play on their console, like NBA 2K21, Microsoft Flight Simulator 2021, or even Halo Infinite when that launches this December.

Reports claim that Vanguard on PlayStation 5 is smaller in size, trending with games like Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart (42.19 GB), Returnal (55.56 GB) and Demon’s Souls (53.65 GB). That’s due to the Kraken compression technology that Sony has integrated into the console, meaning that though the PS5 has a lot less usable storage than the Xbox Series X, games are not taking up too much of the available and metaphorical pie.
