There’s little denying that Call of Duty isn't one of the most popular and financially lucrative first-person shooters of the last two decades since its inception in 2003. What’s more, despite a rocky launch in 2020, Cyberpunk 2077 is now one of the most fulfilling and immersive sci-RPGs in recent years.
So it would make total sense if we could enjoy a game that perhaps blends the best of both Call of Duty and Cyberpunk 2077, right? Well, that looks like what we’ll be getting with the upcoming battle royale FPS, Off The Grid.

Developed by German studio Gunzilla Games in collaboration with movie director and screenwriter Neill Blomkamp (District 9, Elysium and Chappie), Off the Grid is a PvP free-to-play battle royale (with PvE story missions) that brings the fight in a big way. Giving me major MAG vibes, the 256-player PS3 shooter that was way ahead of its time, Off the Grid brings a lesser (but still impressive) total of 150 players to the battlefield.

Off the Grid has a dystopian cyberpunk theme and also gives me vibes of Call of Duty: Black Ops. “PvP and PvE collide to create the most extreme battle royale ever! Three gaming companies have set aside their differences to develop the ultimate adrenaline rush for pro gamers on a dystopian tropical island scarred by a history of corporate warfare,” reads the description of Off the Grid.
“Experience a 60-hour-long immersive narrative campaign on Teardrop Island while simultaneously surviving a 150-player battle royale — no problem for an elite gamer such as yourself, right? Build your ultimate character by extracting high-value loot from the Island and empower your character with unique abilities by modifying your body with cybernetic limbs mid-battle. Armed with lethal cyberlimbs and hundreds of possible weapon combinations, you’re all set to scramble to the top.”
Off the Grid sounds and looks like it could be a lot of fun. However, we’ve seen promising free-to-play battle royales in the past that were pretty much dead on arrival. It remains to be seen whether Off the Grid will suffer that very same fate.
Off the Grid does not have a release date at the time of writing, but we do know that it will be released for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. However, beta tests have already taken place, so hopefully, it will be released at some point this year.
