Cyberpunk 2077 developer explains why one expansion is all we're getting

Cyberpunk 2077 developer explains why one expansion is all we're getting

It's keeping its cards close to its chest for the time being.

CD Projekt Red has confirmed that Phantom Liberty, the upcoming DLC for Cyberpunk 2077, will be the game's one and only expansion as the team turns their focus to the sequel.

As a "spy-thriller" story, V and Johnny Silverhand will become embroiled in the conflicts in the Pacifica Combat Zone, causing the two to pledge their allegiance to the New United States of America. Details are, appreciably, under wraps for the time being but we know that it will come to PC and consoles in 2023.

We were already aware that there were no plans to bring more fully-fledged DLCs to Night City. However, in the recent strategy call from CD Projekt Red, the sequel was announced and that fills in the blanks on why the developer will no longer support the game with chunky content updates past Phantom Liberty.

Additionally, senior level designer Miles Tost took to Twitter to reiterate the reasoning. "For anyone wondering why "only" one Cyberpunk 2077 expansion," he said, quote-retweeting the Project Orion reveal, "don't worry, we still got your backs, chooms!"

Once again, CD Projekt Red is keeping its cards very close to its chest over Project Orion. It seems the events of the past two years are still prescient for the team. "Our plans are certainly ambitious, and call for a great deal of work, dedication and further growth," said vice president and CFO Piotr Nielubowicz in a press release. "This is why we’re setting up a new team in Boston, which, together with the expanding Vancouver team, will form our new studio - CD Projekt Red North America. As a result, we will be able to fully tap into the North American talent pool."
