Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty Metacritic score makes it one of the year's best-reviewed games

Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty has received rave reviews from critics, making it one of the year's best-reviewed games.

Cyberpunk 2077 has finally completed its redemption arc. The game’s first and only expansion, Phantom Liberty, is on the way on 26 September. With review’s having now dropped, it’s already one the year’s best-reviewed games. Oh my, this franchise has come a long way.

Don’t forget that Cyberpunk 2077’s Update 2.0 drops today so even if you don’t pick up Phantom Liberty, you should be able to enjoy a number of new gameplay features and quality-of-life upgrades - including the introduction of vehicular combat. Devs do have one important piece of advice you should read before diving in though. By the sounds of it, you really should pick up Phantom Liberty. The expansion has landed an impressive Metacritic score of 89 on Xbox and PC, with a score of 88 on PS5. We’ve rounded up what reviewers are saying.

Take a look at Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty in action below.

In our own review, we wrote, “Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty is quite possibly the greatest expansion I’ve ever played. CD Projekt RED’s first - and only - major paid DLC for the sci-fi RPG is up there with The Witcher 3: Blood And Wine and Undead Nightmare in terms of new content and sheer, dizzying invention. But where most expansions would be content to throw in some new gameplay mechanics, a fresh story, and some new areas to explore, Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty is a top-to-bottom overhaul of the entire game.”

Dexerto rated the game a perfect game, saying, “CD Projekt RED has repeated its excellence of great DLC for their RPGs with Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty. Much like with The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, the developer has crafted a meaningful expansion on the base game. They’ve clearly learned from their mistakes, listened to the community, and expanded the game to provide a larger-than-life experience to its devoted fanbase.”

Inverse awarded nine stars, saying, “Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty is one of the best uses of the spy thriller I’ve ever seen in video games, and the difference between this expansion and the base game circa 2020 is staggering. I certainly didn’t expect to be saying Cyberpunk 2077 is now one of the must-play experiences of 2023, a year already packed with dozens of incredible games.”

Currently, the game has only received one ‘mixed’ review. Awarding a score of 70, Attack of the Fanboy said, “Phantom Liberty has some great moments, but it’s ultimately a by-the-numbers spy thriller with an uninteresting cast that can’t be saved by celebrity star power.” Each to their own. Personally, I cannot wait to dive in.
