'Cyberpunk 2077' Studio Settles Lawsuit With Teeny Tiny Payout To Investors

'Cyberpunk 2077' Studio Settles Lawsuit With Teeny Tiny Payout To Investors

Considering that the game made over $600 million in its first month from digital sales alone...

CD Projekt Red has settled one of the lawsuits it was grappling with for the shambolic state of Cyberpunk 2077 with a payout to its investors, costing it $1.85 million. To compare, Cyberpunk 2077 apparently grossed over $600 million in digital sales only when it launched last year. This is practically peanuts.

At this point, we're all aware of the onslaught of bugs and glitches that plagued the game, how they slipped through the net, and the catastrophic slew of refunds and rejections that it suffered. Before the end of its first month, investors had built a case against CD Projekt Red claiming that "reputational and pecuniary harm" had been done to the studio and "defendants' statements about its business, operations, and prospects, were materially false and misleading and/or lacked a reasonable basis at all relevant times." In short the studio really stepped in it.

CD Projekt Red is rumbling along repairing Cyberpunk 2077 and it looks like that one of the lawsuits it was dealing with has come to a conclusion. “In the framework of negotiations concerning a potential settlement agreement in a case pending before the US District Court for the Central District of California (hereinafter referred to as “the Court”), a proposal regarding key terms, which – if agreed upon – would provide the basis for a prospective written settlement agreement was officially formulated on 7 December 2021," read the statement from the studio on its official website.

"According to these terms, members of the class (including the plaintiffs) would relinquish all claims against the Company and members of its Management Board. Furthermore, under the agreement, a settlement in the amount of 1 850 000 (one million eight hundred and fifty thousand) USD would be paid out to the class by the Company and its insurer – Colonnade Insurance S.A.”

While $1.85 million might be a lot to you and me, it's negligible to the studio. In its latest earnings calls, CD Projekt Red's overall sales revenue has increased by nearly 40% compared to this time last year, and it expects to generate a net profit of $304 million in this year alone. Why the settlement is so small is unknown, however, it is one sign that CD Projekt Red is chipping away at the unwieldy weight of Cyberpunk 2077's image.
