'Dark Souls' Voted "Ultimate Video Game Of All-Time"

FromSoftware's classic is the best of the best.

We’ve all got our favourite games. For me personally, my favourite game of all time is probably Portal 2. I mean the performances, the puzzles, the environments, the lemon monologue - it’s all perfect for me. A true 10/10 game if ever there was one. But when we’re not talking about just our preferences and the ultimate game of all-time there seems to be a new winner. FromSoftware’s Dark Souls

As reported by GamesRadar+, Dark Souls has been awarded with the title of Ultimate Video Game Of All-Time by the Golden Joystick Awards. The ceremony happened earlier this week and the theme of the celebration was the 50th anniversary of video games, so of course they had to pick some all-time favourites.

Dark Souls came out on stop by a measure of several elements. First there was a judging panel, attended by industry experts from developers to journalists and beyond. Other factors were taken into consideration, like previous awards games had won such as game of the year or of the decade, and then each judge put together their top 20 titles. Once a final 20 was decided from the judges’ picks, they had to consider: critical reception, legacy and influence, commercial success, social impact, and subjective interpretation. Eventually that all led to Dark Souls coming out on top by public vote.

The other games that could have won the category were:

  • Doom (1993)
  • The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
  • Half-Life 2
  • Minecraft
  • Street Fighter II
  • Tetris
  • The Last of Us
  • Super Mario 64
  • Metal Gear Solid
  • Halo: Combat Evolved
  • Super Mario Bros. 3
  • Grand Theft Auto V
  • Portal
  • Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
  • Pac Man
  • Super Mario Kart
  • Space Invaders
  • Sim City (1989)
  • Pokémon GO

Ah at least, Portal got a mention. Speaking of Valve, the founder Gabe Newell also made an appearance at the celebrations accepting a different award. The Golden Joysticks also wanted to make sure to award a piece of tech with best hardware of all time. I’m sure it’s no surprise to you or, in fact anyone, that the PC won. Consoles are great and all but PCs have been a consistent part of gaming set ups for the longest time.
