The Batman, the upcoming reboot of the caped crusader's origin story from director Matt Reeves, might be hiding one of the hero's greatest foes in plain sight. There's a rumour that the Joker is joining the other villains - Riddler and Penguin - though the actor who is apparently playing the character may surprise you.
The story begins with a Batman who is unpicking the threads of the tapestry of Gotham City's corruption, discovering his own family's role in the depravity as well as honing his detective and combat skills to deliver what he believes to be justice. “Rob is perfect for this role. He was incredible. His transformation was out of this world," said actor Zoë Kravitz, who is playing Selina Kyle, in an interview with Variety.

“Matt Reeves has a lot of heart, and he cares so much for these characters. I’m just very excited for him to be able to go on vacation because he deserves it. I hope the fans love it because we put a lot of work into this," she continued. As well as Kravitz, the cast comprises Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth, Jeffrey Wright as James Gordon, Barry Keoghan as Stanley Merkel, Peter Sarsgaard as Gil Colson, John Turturro as Carmine Falcone, Paul Dano as Riddler and Colin Farrell as Penguin.
In that list, there's someone who is apparently playing the Joker alongside their confirmed character. I'll give you a moment to guess.
If you said Barry Keoghan, then you're on the same wavelength as the source of this specific rumour. The Irish actor was called "the next big thing" in 2018 and that prophecy appears to have been fulfilled, with credits in the critically acclaimed Calm With Horses, Chernobyl, The Green Knight since then. He was also in Marvel's Eternals but the general consensus was that film was fine so I didn't put it in with the others. Sorry, Baz.
Anyway, there's a line of thinking that Stanley Merkel, who will work with Commissioner Gordon and Batman to track down the Riddler, is actually the Joker hiding in plain sight. Keoghan's character hasn't been seen in either of the trailers for The Batman and the actor is definitely a familiar face for film and comic book fans, so he would be a possible draw for audiences. Furthermore, Barry's brother Eric shared on social media: “So it’s finally out My Brother playing the JOKER in the new Batman Unreal Stuff.” That was swiftly scrubbed from the Internet but not before fans screenshotted the statement.
Of course, we don't know for certain, but it would be one heck of a role for Keoghan to embody, especially one with a legacy left behind by Jack Nicholson, Heath Ledger and Joaquin Phoenix. We'll keep you updated.
