Willem Dafoe Wants To Do A 'Joker' Sequel With Joaquin Phoenix

In an interview with GQ, actor Willem Dafoe affirmed that he has heard the rabble-rousing from fans that he would be an amazing casting choice for the most nefarious of Batman's enemies, the Joker. He was hardly going to leave us hanging, so it happens that he's actually thought out a possible sequel to the 2019 movie, and the premise is very enticing.

Spoilers for Spider-Man: No Way Home are in this article, so hot-foot it off to the cinema if you haven't seen the movie yet.

In No Way Home, a messed up spell that Peter Parker and Doctor Strange cast to erase the world's memories of Spider-Man's identity cause other people from other universes to be pulled into their own one: Doc Ock, the Green Goblin, Electro, Lizard and Sandman, namely. The movie affords each of these villains their own moments for empathy, humour, and mischief, yet a lot of reviewers singled out Dafoe's performance as Norman Osborn and the Green Goblin as a highlight of the movie. Indeed, Dafoe wasn't willing to return to the world of Spider-Man unless it would be a significant part of the story and he insisted on doing his own stunts.

"It's really fun to do those things because they're pure. They're pure because what you're doing is what you're doing. And your heart and mind follow," he told GQ. Aw. I'm not sure what that means. But it's sweet. Dafoe is famed for knocking it out of the park with his portrayals of villainous characters and he has had his ear to the ground for the requests from fans over the years that he play the Joker. He's given it some thought and has outlined a story that he'd like to see on the silver screen, standing side by side with Joaquin Phoenix.

“There is something interesting about, like, if there was a Joker imposter," started the actor. "So it would be possible to have not duelling Jokers but someone that says to be the Joker that isn't the Joker. And that kind of opens up the possibility of an interesting story, particularly if you had Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker, and then you had someone who was either imitating or riffing off what he did. I fantasised about that. But other than that I am not talking to anybody [about it], you're the first one.”

A sequel to the 2019 movie is allegedly in the works, though director Todd Phillips hasn't sounded overly confident that a second chapter would be on the cards. This pitch from Dafoe, though, certainly has us curious for the possibility.
