Disney+ Gets Massive Amount Of New Subscribers Despite Upcoming Price Hike

A lot of streaming services have been losing subscribers this year - back in April, it was reported that Netflix had suffered its biggest loss in 10 years (in part due to suspending its service in Russia). Then, only last week, it was revealed that in the UK, between April and June, around 800,000 households cancelled their subscriptions to various video-on-demand services - Prime Video was hit the hardest, with a total of 589,000 subscribed households cancelling.

This information was uncovered by the Broadcast Audience Research Board (Barb), who determined that the rising cost of living in the UK “must have been a catalyst” for the drop in subscribers. Despite that, though, it’s now been revealed that Disney+ has gained a huge amount of global subscribers, even with plans to increase their service costs.

As reported by GameSpot, it was revealed in an investor call yesterday that as of 2 July, Disney+ has reached a whopping 152.1 million subscribers worldwide, with a growth of 31% over the last year. That’s an additional 14.4 million people using the service in the last quarter alone, which has exceeded analysts’ expectations

However, it’s been confirmed that in December, the service will be getting more expensive. A new ad-supported tier (titled Disney Plus Basic) is being introduced at the current pricing of $7.99 per month, and so anyone who wants to continue watching their movies and shows without ads will need to upgrade to Disney Plus Premium, at $10.99 a month.

These changes will be rolled out on 8 December.
