Disney Having "Conversations" Over Future Of Star Wars Sequel Trilogy Characters

Disney Having "Conversations" Over Future Of Star Wars Sequel Trilogy Characters

Disney's creative team has still got the sequels on its mind.

Now there is some distance between the sequels and us, it’s probably a good time for everyone, including Disney, to admit that the Star Wars films split opinion. I’m sure there are plenty of young fans who loved the three films, but there were also plenty of audience members that didn’t think they were at all good. No matter your opinion, however, the characters and the story are canon in the Star Wars universe now, and Disney is apparently wondering what to do that them.

In an interview with Empire (via GameSpot), the president of Lucasfilm, Kathleen Kennedy spoke briefly about the cast of the sequel films and hinted that there are discussions ongoing about what to do with them next. She says in the interview: “Certainly, those are not characters we're going to forget. They will live on, and those are conversations that are going on with the creative team as well.” More specifically this is about Finn, Rey, Poe - though I’m sure if they’re in the mix BB-8 will tag along too.

But what exactly will these characters be part of is the question? Disney has now pursued the Star Wars universe in a few forms, from animation to TV series on its subscription service. It, of course, could be a new film too but that relies on these actors wanting to return to the franchise. Slash Film notes that Oscar Isaac and John Boyega have both said they’re not interested in a Disney+ series, while Daisy Ridley has expressed that she’s doesn’t think “anything could top” The Rise of Skywalker

So although there may be interest in using the characters again on Disney’s side, it might be that the actors are the ones to prevent that from happening. That doesn’t mean it’s completely out of the question to see the characters return though, perhaps in an animated form with a different voice actor for example, but for now, Disney is pretty busy with The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett.
