It's been a huge month for Whovians already. Last week the BBC confirmed that Ncuti Gatwa (Sex Education) is set to take over from Jodie Whittaker as The Doctor in 2023, a massively exciting announcement that has fans new and old looking to the future of Doctor Who with great interest.

Of course some of you may know that 2023 also marks the 60th anniversary of the long-running British sci-fi series, and there returning showrunner Russell T. Davies is clearly planning to celebrate in style.

Exactly one week on from the thrilling Ncuti Gatwa reveal, the BBC announced that David Tennant and Catherine Tate will be returning to Doctor Who as part of the 60th anniversary celebrations.

Tennant played the 10th Doctor from 2005 to 2010, while Tate played companion Donna Noble. The two stars have reunited as The Doctor and Donna for a series of Big Finish audio dramas in the last few years, but this marks their first time onscreen together again since 2010's The End Of Time Part Two (which also happened to be Davies' final episode of Doctor Who before Steven Moffat took over).

It's currently unclear whether Tennant and Tate are returning as part of a multi-Doctor special (similar to 50th anniversary show The Day Of The Doctor), or if Davies has something a little different planned. The BBC Press Office has been careful with its wording, saying only that the actors are "filming scenes set to coincide with Doctor Who's 60th anniversary".

Davies added: "Maybe this is a missing story. Or a parallel world. Or a dream, or a trick, or a flashback. The only thing I can confirm is that it's going to be spectacular, as two of our greatest stars reunite for the battle of a lifetime."

Doctor Who's 60th anniversary celebrations will really start to kick off next year, so expect to learn more about the true nature of Tennant and Tate's return after Jodie Whittaker's final episode this autumn. Until then, let's join hands and pray for news of a Matt Smith/Peter Capaldi return.
