Over the years, there have been many, many Lord of the Rings games. I mean, it’s a massive franchise - it’s what you’d expect. A number of studios have had their hands on it over the years, from Melbourne House and Vivendi Games, to more recently, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, but it’s just been announced that over a decade on since their last game, EA are once again working on a new LOTR title.
Their last game, The Lord of the Rings: Conquest, came out many moons ago in 2009, and although Warner Bros. have released some pretty great titles in the years since (see Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor and its sequel), there’s no doubt that nostalgic fans will be happy to see EA take over again. There’s one rather large catch though - it’s a mobile game.

Did you hear that? That was the sound of 95% of readers clicking away from this article. We can’t sit here and pretend that mobile games can carry the same level of hype as their PC and console counterparts, but this one still sounds pretty interesting. The Lord of the Rings: Heroes of Middle-earth is a “collectible RPG”, which promises “high-fidelity graphics”, as well as “immersive storytelling”, turn-based combat, and “a wide roster of characters from across the vast universe of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit”.

The combination of high-fidelity graphics, cinematic animations, and stylised art immerses players in the fantasy of Middle-earth where they’ll go head-to-head with their favourite characters.”

The Lord of the Rings: Heroes of Middle-earth is expected to enter “limited regional beta testing” this summer, so hopefully it won’t be too long to wait until we can see the game in action.
