'Elden Ring' Has Already Sold A Staggering Number Of Copies

FromSoftware's latest title has been proving incredibly popular, and the sales figures prove it - it's already outsold Dark Souls 3.

It definitely seems like Elden Ring is the internet’s favourite game at the minute. I don’t know about you, but I can’t make a single scroll on Twitter without seeing some funny screenshot, or clip of someone narrowly avoiding death in the most spectacular way possible.

I’m sure it’s not surprising to hear then, that FromSoftware’s latest has been selling pretty well. Really well, in fact. It’s been revealed that as of Monday (14 March), the game has sold 12 million units worldwide. That’s a lot of people out there facing the wrath of, well, basically everything in the Lands Between.

“It's astonishing to see just how many people have been playing Elden Ring. I'd like to extend our heartfelt thanks on behalf of the entire development team,” said Hidetaka Miyazaki, president and CEO of FromSoftware, and also the director of Elden Ring. “We hope players enjoy a high level of freedom when adventuring through its vast world, exploring its many secrets and facing up to its many threats. Thank you for your continued support.”

I’m sure I don’t need to tell you that 12 million is a massive number, but to put it into perspective, as of May 2020, Dark Souls 3 had sold 10 million copies - four years after its release. To have surpassed that in less than three weeks really tells you all you need to know. Also for comparison, the stellar Marvel’s Spider-Man had sold 13.2 million copies just under a year after its release, so unless everyone suddenly decides to hate Elden Ring for some reason, it’s certainly on track to surpass that, too.

Shifting copies off the shelves isn’t the only thing that’s happening fast. Elden Ring’s speedrunning community is already producing some absolutely wild results - in the last couple of days, one very talented player managed to complete an Any% run in under 30 minutes. So yeah, that’s about 90 times faster than the average 45 hour playthrough of the game - I’m almost as terrified by that as I am impressed. I won’t be volunteering to do any better, anyway.
