'Elden Ring' Is The Best-Selling New Game Since 'Red Dead Redemption 2'

Elden Ring has enjoyed a tremendous launch here in the UK, likely far exceeding whatever expectations FromSoftware and Bandai Namco might have had for the game.

According to the latest GSD market data (via GamesIndustry.biz), Elden Ring's combined digital and physical sales make it the biggest launch for a game that isn't Call Of Duty or FIFA since 2019's Red Dead Redemption 2.

FromSoftware's critically acclaimed open-world adventure sold 2.5 times as much as Horizon Forbidden West, although do remember that Elden Ring is multiplatform and not exclusive to any one console. Still, a hugely impressive feat for a new IP... even if it is essentially Dark Souls IV in all but name.

Breaking it down even further, because I know that's what you want you absolute MADLAD, just over 70% of all copies sold were digital. PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 accounted for around 40% of total sales, PC 30%, and Xbox 29%.

Elden Ring's huge success is likely to do with the widely-publicized involvement of Game Of Thrones author George R.R. Martin, coupled with the heaps of glowing 10/10 reviews for the game.

In our own Elden Ring review, we gave it a perfect score and hailed it as a modern masterpiece that shouldn't be missed.

I can't help but wonder how such a large audience is getting on with Elden Ring so far, however. FromSoftware games are intensely challenging, and have traditionally appealed to a smaller "hardcore" crowd until now.

FromSoftware has made it clear the game will not be getting an easy mode in the near-future (or ever), meaning that are doubtless scores of newcomers who are learning the hard way that these games do not mess about. Will they persevere? Or take their copies back to the store?
